Sunil Gangopadhyay was born in Madaripur district, Maijpara village of Kalkini police station. Present which belongs to Bangladesh. Although he was born in Bangladesh, he grew up in West Bengal, India. He studied at Calcutta University. Dad was a school teacher. The schoolmaster's salary was lower than that of a bank peon. Sunil's mother never wanted her son to teach. After finishing his studies, he worked in the office for some time. Since then in journalism. In 2002, Sunil Gangopadhyay was elected Sheriff of Calcutta. He was awarded the Ananda Award in 1962 and 1969 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975.
He died on 23 October 2012 due to a heart condition. On April 4, 2003, Sunil Gangopadhyay donated his wife's body to Ganadarpan in Kolkata. But his body was cremated at the behest of Souvik Gangopadhyay, the only son of Sunil Gangopadhyay. His last rites were performed on 25 October 2012 under the management of the Government of West Bengal.
