Sikandar Abu Jafar on 19 March 1919 in the village of Tentulia in the then Tala upazila of Khulna district. Father's name is Syed Moinuddin Hashem. He was a farmer and trader by profession. Father-in-law Syed Jalaluddin Hashem.

After matriculating from a local school, he went to Ripon College in Calcutta. In 1941 he joined Kazi Nazrul Islam's Navajug. He also worked for Daily Ittefaq and Daily Millat. Our struggle will continue. His composition is a famous song. After partition he moved to Dhaka. He worked as an artist in Radio Pakistan in the fifties. From 1957 to 1975 he was the publisher and editor of the literary magazine 'Samakal'. Sikandar Abu Jafar died on 5 August 1975.

He was awarded the Bangla Academy Award in 1966 and posthumously received the Ekushey Padak in 1984.
