Nirmalendu Guna was born in 1945 in the village of Kashaban in Barhatta, Netrokona. He spent his childhood in Kashabane of Barhatta upazila of Netrokona. His father's name is Sukhendu Prakash Guna and his mother is Binapani. Nirmalendu is the youngest of three daughters and two sons of Sukhendu and Binapani. After the death of his mother at the age of four, his father married Charubala.
Charubala was the master of his studies. He was first admitted in the third class of Coronation Krishnaprasad Institute in Barhatta. In 1972, he got the first division in the metric examination with letters in two subjects.Before the matriculation examination, Nirmalendu Prakash Gune's first poem 'Natun Kandari' was published in 'Uttar Akash' magazine published from Netrokona.
After matriculation, he moved to Anandamohan College, Mymensingh to study ISC You can study here with residential scholarships for good results in metric exams. Netrokona College was the only one among the 119 first division winners of the Dhaka Board in the 1974 ISC examination.
He was active in socialist politics before independence. He was also involved in journalism.
He was awarded Bangla Academy Medal (1982), Ekushey Padak (2001), Swadhinata Puraskar (2016).
