Mamtajuddin Ahmed was born on 18 January 1935 in Malda, West Bengal. His father Kalimuddin Ahmed and mother Sakhina Khatun. He passed the entrance examination from Bholahat Rameshwari Institution in Chapainawabganj in 1951. He later obtained higher education from Rajshahi College and BA and MA degrees in Bengali from Rajshahi University. During his career he taught in various government colleges. For some time he was a part-time professor in the Department of Drama and Music at Dhaka University. He is mainly known as a playwright and actor. He is a pioneer of the drama movement in Bangladesh. Notable plays written by him: Swadhinata Amar Swadhinata, Pala, Swadhinata of Bakulpur, Kanakari of Sat Ghat, Research and Essays: History of Bangladesh Drama, History of Bangladesh Theater, Prasanga Bangladesh, Context Bangabandhu etc. For his contribution to Bengali literature, he was awarded Bangla Academy Award, Shishu Academy Sahitya Puraskar, Shishu Academy Sahitya Puraskar, Ekushey Padak and many other awards and honors.
