Madhusudan Dutt was born on 25 January 1824 in the village of Sagardari in Jessore district. At the end of his school life he was admitted to the Hindu College in Calcutta. While studying in this college, his passion for English literature grew. In 1842 he was baptized. Then his name was first added to 'Michael:'. His strong desire for Western life and intense passion for literary pursuits in English inspired him to write in English. This mistake was later broken by his various difficult experiences in life. His poetic genius was properly enlivened by composing poetry in Bengali. His immortal feat is the poem 'Meghnadabadh'. He added a new dimension to Bengali poetry by introducing Amitrakshara rhymes and sonnets. The poet passed away on June 29, 1873.
