Manik Bandyopadhyay was born in 1908 in the Santal Parganas of Bihar. His real name is Prabodhkumar Bandyopadhyay. His father's name was Harihar Bandyopadhyay and his mother was Nirdasundari Devi. His ancestral home is Malbadia village in Bikrampur area of Munshiganj and his mother's house is Gaodia village in the same area. He matriculated from Medinipur District School in 1926 and passed ISC from Bankura Wesley Mission College in 1928. Then he was admitted to Calcutta Presidency College with Honors in Mathematics. But his fate as a writer was decided when a story called Atsimami was published in Bichitra magazine after betting with friends. At this time he was so engrossed in writing that this remarkable achievement of the student was no longer passed with honors. At just 21 years old, he composed his famous ‘Day and Night Poem’. He then took up writing as his only means of livelihood. He authored more than 50 novels. This great writer died on December 3, 1956.
