Hemchandra Bandyopadhyay was born on 17 April 1838 in the village of Gulita Rajballavhat in Hughli district. His father was Kailash Chandra Bandopadhyay. Hemchandra Bandyopadhyay was in financial crisis while studying at Khidirpur Bangla School in Calcutta. As a result, his studies were stopped. He then learned English under the tutelage of Prasanna Kumar Sarvadhikari, the principal of Calcutta Sanskrit College. Later he passed the senior school examination of Hindu College. He later graduated from Calcutta University in 1859. During his career he engaged in government service, school-teaching and finally law business. He was the most famous poet after Michael Madhusudan Dutt. Inspired by patriotism, he wrote an epic called 'Vrtrasanghar'. Also his notable books of poetry: Chintatarangini Birbahu Ashakanan Chhayamayi etc. Hemchandra Bandyopadhyay died on 24 May 1903.
