Hayat Mamud was born on 2 July 1939 in the village of Maura in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. He is currently a permanent resident of Dhaka Gandaria area. His father was Muhammad Shamser Ali and his mother was Amina Khatun. Hayat Mamud passed the entrance examination from St. Gregory's High School in Dhaka in 1956. In 1958, he graduated from the then Quaid-e-Azam College with a bachelor's degree and a bachelor's and master's degree in Bengali with honors from Dhaka University. He later obtained his PhD from Jadavpur University, Calcutta. During his career he retired after teaching at Chittagong University and Jahangirnagar University. Although he started his literary career by writing poems and stories, he later rose to fame in research and essay literature. He is the author of more than half a hundred books. He was awarded the Bangla Academy Award for his significant contribution in the field of literature.
