He was born on 14 June 1932 in his grandfather's house in Jamalpur district. His ancestral home was at Kulkandi village in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur district. His father's name was Abdur Rahman and his mother's name was Hafiza Khatun. Hasan married Hafizur Rahman Sayeda Hasan on 17 April 1956. Hasan Hafizur Rahman and Sayeda Hasan's first child was named Hasan Saeed Disha. The name of the second child is Esha Hasan Munni.

In 1938, he was admitted to the third class of Nabakumar School in Dhaka. When his father was transferred to Barisal in 1939, he studied at Singjani High School in Jamalpur for three years. When his father was transferred to Dhaka in 1942, he was admitted to the Dhaka Collegiate School and studied there till the secondary examination. In 1946, Hasan Hafizur Rahman passed the secondary examination from Dhaka Collegiate School. And in the same year he was admitted in the humanities branch in the higher secondary class of Dhaka College. Hasan Hafizur Rahman graduated from Dhaka College in 1948. And B.A. in the Department of Political Science, Dhaka University this year. Admitted to honors class. But instead of taking part in the honors final examination, in 1951 he passed the B.A. Pass the test.

Hasan Hafizur Rahman's career was very diverse. He started his career in the weekly Begum in 1952. He then served as Assistant Editor at Saugat (1953), Ittehad (1955-54) and Dainik Pakistan (1965) at the same time and was appointed President of the Editorial Board of Dainik Bangla after independence. Besides journalism, he was a professor of Bengali language and literature at Jagannath College from 1957-1964. He also served as Press Counselor at the Bangladesh Embassy in Moscow in 1973.

When he was a schoolboy in 1946, his short story "Tearless Path" was published in Saugat. Two years later, his first poem was published in Sonar Bangla. He actively contributed to the language movement of 1952. His poem Amar Ekushey was published in 1952 based on the spirit of Ekushey. He published his first book Ekushey February in 1953, compiling some other writings including this one.

He was awarded the Freedom Award in 2002, the country's highest civilian award, for his outstanding contributions to the country's literature.

Hasan Hafizur Rahman died on 1 April 1983 at Moscow Central Clinical Hospital.
