In Bangladesh, 54 species of freshwater fish are almost extinct, 26 species are extremely endangered and 14 species are endangered.
Bengalis are called 'fish-rice' Bengalis. Bangladesh, the land of that river and the land of pond-filled fish, is now almost empty of canals, beels, rivers and canals. The festival of making various installations is going on by filling the canals and beels. So if there is no canal-bill, where will the fish be? And in the remaining rivers, the level of pollution is so high that it is difficult for fish to survive. There are several other factors that contribute to the extinction of freshwater fish. For example: Excessive use of pesticides on agricultural land has led to the infiltration of these pesticides into rainwater or irrigation ponds, ponds and pose a threat to fish survival. Thus, our favourite fish are slowly becoming extinct due to various natural and man-made reasons.
At present, fish farmers are also cultivating species of fish which are fast growing in a very short period of time. We are losing many native fish only because of commercially profitable fish farming and reluctance to cultivate native fish in open water. These farmed fish have no taste. But the taste of small and big local fish is nectar.
The government should take necessary steps in this regard now. For example, if steps are taken to restore lost rivers, increase river navigability, prevent river pollution, conserve biodiversity, encourage fishermen to cultivate native fish, etc., we may be able to save these native fish from extinction.
Bengalis will be able to taste various local fish again.
