Research on the Nipah virus in the country will help in the production of vaccines

The International Center for Diarrhea Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR'B) is launching new research in the country to produce a vaccine for the Nipah virus. The study is being funded and supported by The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (SEP) in Norway, led by the organization.

ICDDR'B says the study will look at the human body's response to the virus, with the participation of a few survivors of the deadly Nipah infection. This will help in the invention of the much-needed Nipah vaccine.

  • how to prevent the Nipah virus

This information was given in a press release sent from ICDDR'B on Tuesday (March 15) night.

It said more than 50 patients who had recovered from Nipah would participate in the study. The goal is to identify the immune system developed against the virus due to the previous Nipah outbreak and to try to understand how it changes over time. This new information will provide significant support for the development of tools for diagnostic testing, treatment, and vaccines. The study will be conducted in Bangladesh, where Nipah virus infection occurs almost every year.

It is said that CP will provide 9 lakh 60 thousand dollars for conducting this study. Sep is already conducting similar activities with the University of Malaya in Malaysia on people who have recovered from the Nipah virus infection. The ICDDRB study will increase the number of participants in the study of survivors of the Nipah virus infection. At the same time immunity, data will be recorded and the infected people in Malaysia will be compared with the Nipah strain.

  • Steps to developing the Nipah virus vaccine

In addition to scientific advances in the virus, biological components from survivors of the Nipah virus will help develop the necessary research tools and immunity standards for the upcoming second phase of the Nipah vaccine clinical trial, which will begin in mid-2022, the release said.

Research tools and immunity standards have been developed by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Product Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in coordination with scientists with biological standards expertise. These assessments and immunity standards will help CP-funded and other Nipah vaccine developers advance their programs.

SEP funding for this project will help build the capacity of local laboratories in Bangladesh to deal with clinical trials and new outbreaks of Nipah or impending infectious diseases. SEP's goal is to play a more effective role in enhancing and expanding global cooperation through stronger and more effective global coordination.

In this context, the executive director of the research and development branch of SEP. "From the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, we understand that research can provide very important information about how the virus works in the body of people who have been infected, or how the virus reacts in the body," said Melanie Savile. Such information contributes significantly to the development of life-saving tools such as vaccines.

He said the new study with Bangladesh's world-leading scientific institute ICDDRB is essential for advancing the development of the Nipah vaccine. The future will provide much-needed information and material to support vaccine licensing. We thank the survivors of Nipah for taking part in this important study to make progress in epidemic preparedness and to protect these high-risk areas.

ICDDR'B Executive Director. Tahmid Ahmed said ICDDR'B has more than five decades of experience in vaccine research. The company has made significant contributions to the development and licensing of many vaccines, including cholera, typhoid, rotavirus, measles, polio, pneumonia, dengue, and HPD.

"In partnership with the government, we are conducting the world's longest-running Nipah virus surveillance to identify early stages of Nipah virus transmission from animals to humans, search for the cause of the disease and find out the dynamics of the infection and how to prevent infection," he said.

"We are delighted to be a part of this great initiative to gather new knowledge and evidence," said Tahmid Ahmed. Which will help develop a vaccine against Nipah disease that has the potential to create a potentially global epidemic and save countless lives.

"I believe that the work we are doing in Bangladesh will be strengthened through this research," he added. I am extremely grateful to SEP for this opportunity.

Chief Scientific Officer of the UK Medicines and Health Care Product Regulatory Agency. Mark Bailey said the ICDDR's cooperation was crucial in developing the World Health Organization's international standards and other reference materials. These materials are especially difficult to collect, especially in this case.
