The Island of Princess Sabrina
In a land long ago there lived a beautiful young princess. She was so lovely as to have all of Nature at her beckoning call.
The animals loved her. The trees and flowers adored her. The flying birds and bees would constantly sing their sweet songs to her.
One day, a band of travelling fairies, who had nothing to do but make mischief on all they saw – arrived at princess Sabrina’s castle. They observed how happy and carefree she was with everything around her.
They became very jealous. One nasty female fairy said, “Why should she have all the fun…we travel everywhere and none of those nice things happens to us!
The other fairies agreed. They decided to carry off the princess and put her on a deserted island in the middle of a vast ocean.
The fairies laughed together, then one said, “Yea, let’s see what she can do when she is all by herself!”
With that said, they scooted down and snatched the princess from the flower bed she was resting on. They carried her sleeping body across the ocean and deposited it gently on the sandy beach of a faraway island.
The princess awoke when she felt the ocean waves lapping at her feet. The water was warm and it tickled her toes.
She awoke with at first a joy….”Who is that tickling me!” She said with a smile.
Then she looked down and saw it was an ocean wave that had crept onshore and the very tip of it was nestled on her toes.
She jumped up and screamed…” Why am I here?...”Who put me on this island so far from my home?”
A band of winged angels appeared before her. They fluttered around her head and taunted her.
“you have led a good life without any suffering…let’s see what you can do when you have to fend for yourself!”
With that said, then they laughed and snickered and flew off into the clouds.
Princess Sabrina was devastated. She had only known happiness in her life, now, this uncertainty was thrust upon her. She was at a loss on what to do. She cuddled her soft hands to her face and cried sorrowful tears.
An eagle that had been flying in the sky above her saw her lament. He flew down to her side.
Then, to her utter amazement, he began to wave his wings in sign language. It was the same language used by the deaf to communicate with each other. The eagle had observed this as there was an island in the ocean where the inhabitants only spoke to each other through sign language.
The princess, who had access to a vast library of books had managed to learn as many languages as she could- sign language being one of them.
She looked at the eagle who had just asked her through the flutter of his wings, “What is the matter..why do you cry so sadly?”
The princess told him what had happened through the display of her hands and fingers. The eagle nodded his head and told her…” I will call my brethren from the sky. The seagulls and albatrosses will swarm here and together we shall build you a cabin and make you a beautiful garden where you can grow flowers and vegetables.
With that said, he flew off to gather the winged creatures to help build a home for the princess.
On the ocean, that day, was a seasoned fisherman. He had groped this liquid for various years. He lived alone in a cabin on the shoreline of one of the islands near the mainland. He was an excellent fisherman and kept to himself most of the time. Today, he had ventured further into the ocean than he had ever gone before. This is because he had fallen asleep during the noonday Sun. It was a balmy day and the ocean was very peaceful.
Suddenly, and without any warning, a huge rogue wave came rolling in and capsized his boat. He found himself in the water with only a plank from the ship’s deck to keep him afloat.
He was a very good swimmer and he used his hands as paddles and began to swim with the current that seemed to carry him deeper into the vast ocean.
The next day the eagle had returned with a bevvy of seagulls and albatrosses.
They worked all day long and finally finished a wonderful log cabin and a most beautiful vegetable and flower garden.
This included a grape bush…to make fine wine.
They were also sure to plant a Cacao tree…so the berries from it could make a divine chocolate cake.
Princess Sabrina was happy with their work and she thanked them very much.
The next morning she was sitting on her porch swing. The lovely one that the seagulls had built for her. She was swinging to and fro looking out into the vast ocean.
All of a sudden a wooden plank with the half-drowned body of the fisherman washed up onto the shore.
The princess dashed down and grabbed the fisherman with both hands and dragged him back to her cabin.
When he awoke the first thing he saw was this beautiful princess standing over him. She looked down with a smile, then gently said, “ I am princess Sabrina and this is my domain. Please, don’t try to speak, as I see you have not eaten in a long time. I have prepared a delicious chocolate cake and a fine mellow wine from my recipes.”
With that said, she gave the fisherman the most wonderful chocolate cake that he had ever tasted. He then gulped down this wondrous wine that she had made from the grape bush in her backyard.
So wonderful was this meal that the fisherman came alive from its nourishment.
He looked at the princess and said, “ I am Anton, the fisherman. In all my life I have searched for a dream so beautiful as the one I am now experiencing. It was fate that brought me here. It was a miracle destined for me to meet you. I shall spend the rest of my life with a single purpose…that is, to make you happy!”
The Princess blushed. Her face shimmered when she told, “To reveal you were always my fantasy. Even as a little girl I discerned true love would someday come my way….and here you are, to stay with me forever.”
As she said that Anton took a small backpack that had been around his shoulders. It was made of buckskin and had survived the long trolling trip through the troubled waters. He opened the pack and it contained a dozen of the finest oysters to be found in the sea.
They ate each oyster and every one of them contained a pearl. After they were finished eating, Anton, with the fisherman’s tools he kept on his belt, fashioned a perfect pearl necklace.
He placed the necklace around the neck of the princess and said, “let my love be as each of these pearls- so we may spend the rest of our lives together in full happiness.” Then, they entered over, nigher together, and smooched for the initial time.
While all this was happening the band of mischievous fairies had been hiding in a billowing cloud taking all of this in.
They were furious that things had gone so well with princess Sabrina and Anton the fisherman.
One fairy who seemed to be the leader of this nasty bunch spoke up, “ I think we will have to come up with a plan to keep these two fanatics.” The others trembled their expanses in consensus.
“Yes”..said one of the ingenious fairies, “we shall do our best to spoil their happiness together.” With that said, there were snickers from the rest of this gaudy band of tricksters!!!...
See how the princess and the fisherman survive the taunting of these tricksters in part 2 of “ The Island of Princess Sabrina”- to be completed in my forthcoming book.
