ON JUBILEE CHURCHES
I was asked about Jubilee churches in celebration of the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines. As far as I know the CBCP decided to designate churches in different dioceses and archdioceses to see to it that the plan of the Church for the celebration will be implemented. The faithful are encouraged to pray, reconcile with God, and do acts of charity. While all of these are regular tasks of every parish, the jubilee churches are expected to provide them more frequently and available to many. These jubilee churches are given more responsibilities to meet the needs of the faithful for the celebration.
In any case, if anyone, for some reasons, could not visit any of the churches, the nearest church or chapel should serve the purpose. Essentially, the celebration is not about the church as a structure, but the conversion of the faithful. If the faithful visits any place of worship, spend time in prayer, go to confession, and donate to the church or personally make an act of charity to the poor, he or she will be worthy of the graces proper to a pilgrim.
Just a word of caution. A mere casual visit does not fulfill the purpose. Nor is it just about having visited ALL the jubilee churches and having pictures taken. One must be a pilgrim and not a tourist. By pilgrim, it means that one is doing it as an act of faith.
In the end, it is best to visit as many jubilee churches as you can. But it is not necessary. Even visiting just one would be enough. What matters is you have prayed sincerely, reconciled with God, and left committed to always take the opportunity to be charitable to others, materially and spiritually.
