History of volleyball
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was actually called mintonette at first, and the name "volleyball" didn't come along until 1946.
Volleyball is a sport that can be played by individuals, pairs, or teams of three or four players. The object of the game is to hit a ball over a high net with the hands and then prevent the opposing team from doing so.
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical education teacher at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. While on a trip to England, he noticed that some girls were playing a game called "mintonette" using a net and tennis ball. He created his own version of this game, which he called mintonette.
Morgan's rules were accepted by the YMNCA in 1896 and spread quickly across the country. In 1899, the name changed to volleyball because it was easier to pronounce than mintonette.
In 1896, the first official ball was designed for women's play—it had no holes (only later did men's balls come with holes). But by 1900, both men's and women's games had begun using balls with holes in them!
Volleyball originated in the United States in 1895. The game was invented by William G. Morgan, a physical education teacher at the YMCA training school in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Morgan set out to create a sport that combined the elements of basketball, baseball, and soccer. He wanted to develop a game that would be easy to learn and play for all ages and abilities. Using equipment from his gymnasium, he created a netless court with two opposing sides; the netless design allowed players to use their arms and hands while playing the game.
The first game was played outdoors on grass courts at Springfield College in Massachusetts; it was so popular that Morgan decided to officially name it "volleyball," after the word "volley" which had been used when referring to an overhead hit in tennis in 1892 by Richard Pearsall of Springfield College.
Volleyball is an Olympic sport that has been played since 1895. It was originally called "mintonette" because it was invented by William G. Morgan and debuted in Holyoke, MA at the Holyoke YMCA.
In 1896, volleyball was officially added to the Olympic program for the first time at the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The United States won the gold medal in men's indoor volleyball, while women's indoor volleyball was introduced at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. In 1996, beach volleyball was added as an official event at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
