A Random Narrative - A Night with the Flippin' Weather.
It was 2:37 AM.
It was cold, harsh, and dusty. The weather- the flippin’ weather was sick and it made me feel nauseous. I woke up craving pounded yam and vegetable soup; the one cooked by my mum specifically. You might be wondering if this was some kind of manipulation from the dream, but I can assure you, it wasn’t.
Everywhere was utterly dark, but it wasn’t quiet. The only thing visible was the light from my phone’s screen as I checked what the time was. I could hear the chirpings of the crickets, the tongues of some prayer warriors, the snores of my roommate, and the giggles of some love-struck girl who was on a phone call just by the walkway. None of these were unusual. In fact, it was oddly too calm for the hostel I stay in. Usually, there were groups of girls laughing and exchanging gist on the “fly-over”, my late-to-bed roommate laughing over TikTok videos, or the siren of the security patrol moving around school.
I stared at nothing for a good amount of time. Different thoughts eluded my mind. I wondered why I woke up by this time, wrestled with my conscience on why I should attend the classes fixed for later that day, and tried thinking about the outfit I’d eventually be putting on, what foods I’d be eating for the day, and why the flippin’ weather was this harsh on a January morning. These thoughts were put off when my roommate’s alarm started ringing and vibrating. It was already 3 AM. At that point, it dawned on me that I really needed to get some rest, but I couldn’t because my eyes had started to feel itchy. It was the flippin’ weather. I decided to get off my bed to wash my face, maybe that was going to help, but I remembered the rumor of a girl seeing some guy in the hostel around this time too, a few days ago. I didn’t want to take the risk, so I decided to stay put.
My roommate’s alarm was still ringing.
Great! I had a very slim chance of falling asleep. My throat started to feel dry from the dust and the dry breeze, and I needed water. Luckily, my water can was just beside me, so I stretched to get it.
A while later, I knew I had to pee, so I said in my head, “f*** it, I’m stepping out. Why would anyone be lurking around anyways?”. I stepped out to the restroom and I got back feeling quite relieved. I laid down gently, trying so hard not to think of anything. It didn’t work as my mind took me to the thought of my mum and then my family. I dwelled on that thought, and before I knew it, it was 6:52 AM.
I had eventually fallen asleep.
An abrupt end? I’m aware. I was just testing my narrative abilities on this one. I wasn’t a fan of the weather, that’s why I regarded it as “flippin’’’.
