Sir Nilratan Sarkar (October 1, 181 - May 17, 1943) was a famous physician and educator. He was involved in many educational and research institutions and collaborated in setting them up. He was an active politician and made significant contributions to the industrial establishment. In 16 AD, Nilratan married Nirmala, the daughter of Girish Chandra Majumdar, a Brahmin missionary from East Bengal.
He was born on 1 October 181 in the leadership of 24 parganas. His original home is Jessore. His father's name was Nandalal Sarkar. Nandalal Sarkar was from a poor Kayastha family in Jessore. He later started living in Jayanagar. The famous children's writer Yogindranath Sarkar is the brother of Nilratan Sarkar.
Nilratan Sarkar passed the entrance examination from Joynagar in 18 AD and his doctorate from Campbell Medical School. He then passed LA and BA from Metropolitan College. He entered Calcutta Medical College in 175 AD and became MB in 18 AD. After that he got MA and MD degrees in 189 AD.
After passing LA and BA from Metropolitan College, he was the headmaster of Chatra High School for some time. He became an MB from Calcutta Medical College and joined Mayo Native Hospital as a House Surgeon. Nilratan Sarkar soon became famous as a doctor. His remuneration started at two rupees and gradually increased to 64 rupees. He treated poor patients free of charge and gave them free medicine and food. In 1893 he became a Fellow of the University and later Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine. He was also the President of the Department of Postgraduate Arts (1924 to 1928) and the Department of Science Education (1924 to 1943).
In 1895 he established a private medical college. In 1918, the college was renamed Carmichael Medical College, which was later renamed as RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Medical Education Society was formed in 1918 to look after various aspects of Carmichael Medical College. Nilratan became its president in 1922 and held the post till 1941.
Nilratan became the director of Boot and Equipment in 1908. Bose was the trustee of the Science Temple, Visva-Bharati and the Indian Museum. From 1912 to 1926 he was a member of the Bengal Governing Body.
He was among the architects of the Science College of the University of Calcutta and the National Council of Education. He was closely associated with the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science. As the secretary of the National Education Council, he tried to get vocational training in this country. He was also instrumental in setting up Bengal Technical School, Jadavpur Engineering College etc. He assisted in the establishment of Jadavpur Tuberculosis Hospital (now Kumudshankar Roy Tuberculosis Hospital).
He was the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University from 1919 to 1921. In 1920 he attended the British Empire University Conference in London. The University of Oxford awarded him the title of DCL and the University of Cambridge awarded him the title of LLD.
The Nilratan government's interest in the overall development of the country encouraged him to set up various industries. He employed his money in Rangamati Tea Company (later Eastern Tea Company), National Soap Factory and National Tannery Company. The Nilratan government was politically active. He was a member of the Indian National Congress from 1890 to 1919.
Campbell Medical School was transformed into a college and the Nilratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital was named after him.
