William Harvey was born on April 1, 1578, in Folkestone, Kent, South England. He was the eldest of seven siblings. He graduated from Cambridge University after formal education at the Grammar School in Canterbury and Cambridge. After that he was admitted to the University of Padua in Italy to study medicine. The University of Padua was then the best medical center in the world. In Padua, Harvey studied anatomy and embryology with the renowned professor Fabricius. Fabricius was studying the existence of valves in the veins of the body at that time.
Harvey's special interest in physiology and the work of Andreas Vesalius grew in the teachings of Fabricius. Vesalius was a contemporary of Nicolas Copernicus, and at the same time as Copernicus immortal book 'De Revolusnivas' was published in 1540, Vesalius's groundbreaking book on anatomy 'The Anatomy Of the human body' was published. In fact, Vesalius was the first to discover the exact anatomy of the human body. Harvey was naturally attracted to the work of Vesalius.
