Sergeant Zahurul Haque was the 11th accused in the Agartala conspiracy case. He was kept in the cantonment jail. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was imprisoned in the same jail. It is said that when a Pakistani captain was sent to jail on February 15, 1969 for plotting to assassinate Sheikh Mujib, he mistakenly shot Sergeant Zahurul Haque as Mujib. He was shot in the abdomen and taken to a military hospital.
But the government said in a press note that the accused was shot when he tried to flee. He breathed his last at 9:55 that night. Note , that Sheikh Mujib and Sergeant Zahurul Haque had similar mustaches. The people became desperate due to this violent behavior of the government. Just at this time Maulana Bhasani took to the streets declaring solidarity with the movement. Addressing the protesters at Paltan Maidan on February 16, he said, "If necessary, I will break the lock of the prison like the French Revolution and release Sheikh Mujib."
At the same time, millions of people chanted slogans: 'I will break the lock of the jail and bring Sheikh Mujib.' Sergeant Zahurul Haque was born on 9 February 1935 in Sonatala of Noakhali district. After matriculating from Noakhali District School in 1953, he joined the Pakistan Air Force and was later promoted to Sergeant. He was arrested by the government in 1967 on charges of being involved in anti-national activities and was charged in the Agartala conspiracy case. He never bowed his head to anyone. That is why his colleagues used to call him 'Marshal'. He was also a good painter. His paintings are preserved in the Dhaka National Museum.
