He was born in a zamindar family in Jamsherpur of Nadia district. His ancestral home is Balagarh village, Hughli. He took his first degree from Duff College, Calcutta.

He started his career as the personal secretary of Saradacharan Mitra. He later joined the Calcutta Corporation as Natore Maharaj's personal secretary And worked as a manager for the tax company and FN Gupta Company.

He has made constructive contributions to many literary journals. From 1909 to 1913 he was the editor of Mansi. In 1921 and 1922 he was the joint editor of the Jamuna. From 1947 to 1947 he was the owner and editor of Purbachal. The influence of his contemporary Rabindra Sahitya is noticed in his writings. He is considered as one of the leading writers of post-Rabindra Bengali literature. Bagchi died on 1 February 1948.
