Inaugurated in June 1997, the bridge is the 6th largest in South Asia and the 11th largest in the world.
Although the foundation stone of the Jamuna Bridge was laid in 1994 with the help of the Japanese government, the construction work of the bridge was completed in 1997.
Although Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani was the first to demand the construction of a bridge over the river Jamuna, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina implemented it.
The construction of Bangabandhu Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge has resulted in socio-economic development of the country as well as extensive improvement in the transport of passengers and goods by road and rail.
The bridge spans the river Jamuna from Tangail to Sirajganj and is located on the Asian Highway and the Inter-Asian Railway.
The construction of the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge has cost 962 million US dollars. The length of the bridge is 4.8km and the width is 18.5 m.
The bridge is built on 121 steel beams 80-85 meters long to deal with natural disasters. The bridge has 49 spans and 50 pillars.
There are 4 lane roads and 2 railway tracks for the movement of vehicles and trains over the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge.
