I think I have the documents for this incident. ” Holmes flipped through the papers, looked at the date, and pulled out one. Then he began to read it in two folds:

Gems stolen from Hotel Cosmopolitan. A 26-year-old mill mechanic named John Horner has been arrested on charges of stealing a precious gem called Neel Padmarag from the jewelery box of the Countess of Morkar on the 22nd of this month. The testimony of James Ryder, the hotel's chief waitress, revealed that Ryder had brought Horner to the Countess's dressing room to weld a broken chain in a fireplace. Ryder was with Horner for a while. Then at Rider's call he leaves Horner alone for a while and goes outside for a while. When he returned, he found her gone. The drawers of the house are broken. The small Moroccan box in which the Countess kept the gem lay empty on the dressing table. The rider immediately sounds the alarm. Horner was arrested that evening. But the gem was not found near him or anywhere in his house. Catherine Cassack, the Countess's maid, came running after hearing the rider scream. Ryder's testimony matched his testimony. B Division Inspector Bradstreet said Horner had been arrested. He asserted that his confession had been obtained through torture, and that his confession had been obtained through torture. The magistrate quickly sent him to Assis without any decision as he had been charged with robbery before. The accused was extremely bewildered. He fainted on hearing the magistrate's verdict. He was then arrested and taken to court.
