Bangladesh is a populous country. The basic needs of the people of this country are constantly under threat. So people are not able to meet their needs as per the need. The shortage of supply according to the demand of the people is now being observed in the field of energy as well. The existence of human civilization depends on energy, but the energy crisis in our country has taken a definite shape. Therefore, in order to solve this energy crisis, it is necessary to expand alternative energy.
*Sources of energy in Bangladesh:
Bangladesh is not very rich in energy. Non-commercial sources of energy in this country are- biofuels, agricultural residues, timber and animal manure etc. Commercial sources of fuel are fossil fuels such as coal, oil, natural gas and water energy.
*Causes of energy crisis:
One of the sources of energy in Bangladesh is coal, gas and oil. Lots of gas, coal and oil are used in industry, transportation, cooking and land irrigation. The causes of the natural gas, coal, mineral oil and water energy crisis are discussed below:
*Causes of Natural Gas Crisis:
Natural gas is one of the energy resources of Bangladesh. It accounts for 75% of the total commercial fuel consumption. There are 25 gas fields in this country. But gas is being extracted from 63 wells in 19 gas fields. It goes without saying that all the international companies with which Bangladesh has contracted for gas extraction and exploration have no experience. A huge potential area of Sylhet including Tengratila was leased to an unknown Canadian company called Niko. The company has caused severe damage to the gas field. The American Occidental Company started digging a well at Magurchhara in Moulvibazar, but after 12 days, a catastrophic fire broke out. The fire continued for 6 months. The country's loss stands at 26 million US dollars. Thus, the natural gas crisis of our country is being created.
*Alternative energy sources:
People around the world today are looking for alternative energy sources to escape the horrors of the energy crisis. Scientists from around the world are meeting at an international energy conference to resolve the crisis. They spoke of fourteen alternative sources with an emphasis on mutual cooperation. Notable among them are solar energy, ocean wind energy, nuclear energy, tidal energy, geothermal energy, ocean thermal energy and biogas.
*Organic gas:
Organic gas is the gas produced by the microbial breakdown of organic matter in the absence of air. This gas is composed mainly of methane and carbon dioxide. In the early seventies, a joint venture between the Bangladesh Agricultural University and the Bangladesh Science and Industry Research Council or Science Laboratory undertook a program to build a biogas plant. In 196, a biogas plant with a production capacity of 3 cubic feet was installed in the Science Laboratory. According to the 1998 census, the total number of cattle in Bangladesh is 2,41,90,000 out of which 24,20,000 kilograms of waste is generated every day. It is possible to produce about 3,19,109 cubic meters of biogas per day from this amount of animal waste. According to the 2004-05 census, the number of cattle in Bangladesh is about 4.5 crore. This is double that of 1998. It is possible to make more biogas from this animal waste. In a household with 5-6 cattle, a simple biogas plant is sufficient to meet the daily energy needs of the household. Biogas reduces the pressure on fuel gas and kerosene.
*Solar energy:
Solar energy is one of the sources of alternative energy. Due to the effect of monsoon winds, the country receives rainfall from mid-June to mid-September. The rest of the year the sky is cloudless and sunny. So sunlight can especially help to meet the lack of fuel. Solar panels can be used to convert solar heat energy into electrical energy. At present, solar energy is widely used, especially in rural areas.
*Other energies:
Other energies are energy from tides, thermal energy of the ocean, wave energy, etc. These alternative energies can be used as fuel alternatives.
Although it is said that there is a possibility of sufficient mineral resources in the subsoil of Bangladesh, it could not be discovered due to various complications. As a result, energy crisis is gradually being created in this country. We therefore need to find alternative energy sources for fuel. The government needs to take more multifaceted steps to ensure the use of alternative energy by overcoming the country's energy crisis.
Bangladesh faces an energy crisis due to mismanagement in gas extraction. Alternative energy sources like solar energy and biogas are being explored to address the issue. Government action is needed.
