Splinterlands | Rise of Commons | Revolution!
Splinterlands | Commons and Rares
One of the strengths of the Epic and Legendary cards is that they are usually better than the Rares and Commons. I use the word “usually” just to signify that it is not a given that all Epics and Legendaries trump Rares and Commons. Then, would a battle with only Rare and Commons be a good one? It depends.
It depends on your choice of cards and how best you can use them in the battle. I love many of the common monsters and almost always take them to battle. So, a rule with only Common and Rares should not be too troublesome for me. Or so I think. 😊
Let’s get into a battle to see how my cards stack up against the opponent. But before that, shall we spend a minute getting to know Splinterlands? After all, that’s where you will find all these fun battles, rules, and monsters.
What Game is Splinterlands?
Splinterlands is a digital card game that allows you to collect, trade, battle, rent, and even earn from the cards. *The game gives Play to Earn a whole different meaning.* By now, you would know that the governance token (SPS) airdrop made millionaires out of the early adopters. It still keeps giving and remains a fun and engaging game.
To give you an idea of how lucky you can get in Splinterlands, read my story of getting cards worth $500 from buying only a few packs worth $20.
Got Cards Worth $500 from $20 Packs
And this is just a tiny number. I have witnessed people getting uber-expensive cards in their pack and selling them for as high as $6500. In fact, there is a whole Splinterlands marketplace on the Hive blockchain and now on Wax too. And now the sales of the Rebellion packs, the newest of the lot, have also started.

Commons and Rares | What Is That All About?
Here’s a refresher about the card types for newbies in the arena. There are four primary card types – commons, rares, epics, and legendaries – and in that order. The higher the order, the lesser the availability and the higher the cost. In terms of gameplay, the higher the order, the more complex the card, and hence, better in battle. So, getting a legendary card is more desirable than a common card.
However, each of the cards has its own significance and their benefits in battle. These four categories are also across all Splinters. Now, looking at the common and rare cards alone, I hope you understand that these are comparatively weaker cards. So, to win a battle with them would be fun.
Can we do it? Let’s see.
The Battle | Frowns and Angry Brows
A quick look at the rule, and we get going.
The battle is a 39-mana one with commons-and-rares-only rule in play. There are only three Splinters available for battle. These Splinters are Fire, Earth, and Dragon. Since the battle is nearly 40 mana, there would be heavy mana monsters, and I intended to take a few myself.
So, on to the battle now.
The Face-Off Screen
And let’s look at the opponents in close range.
My summoner and monsters are at the bottom while the opponent’s is at the top. I had chosen Immortalis as the summoner. The best part is that the summoner would partly shield magic attacks while shattering the opponent’s shields and reducing their health by one. So, I thought if I used a monster like the Mushroom Seer, which reduces the opponent’s magic attacks by one, then most of my monsters would remain unaffected by the opponent’s attacks. The only gamble here was that I assumed that the opponent would use magic attacks.
As my luck would have it, the opponent did use magic attack monsters and that fell right in the middle of my strategy.
We Battle Hard
By the end of round 2, this is how the battle appeared.
Clearly, the opponent’s attacks are unable to penetrate my taunt monster, but my attacks have already cleaned up two of the opponent’s monsters. I was doing well. Such was the diversion due to the taunt-ability and void-ability that even my monster in the first position remained unaffected.
And The Battle Races to Conclusion
Massacre. That’s what happened by the end of round 4.
It was finally in the third round that my monster in the first position perished, triggering the martyr-ability. So, my taunt monster gained one stats addition while moving to the first position. But even before round 4 could end, the last of the opponent’s monsters took the final attack and was done for.
I won.
A Hard-Fought Battle | A New Strategy
To use the Mushroom Seer and the Immortalis was a good idea. All the opponent’s magic monsters could not attack at all. I am going to use that more. As for the opponent, he/she would have learned a lot too. That’s what this game is all about. It is fun, and so many strategies to try out.
I hope you enjoyed reading about the battle. Do take a look at the battle live in the link provided below. Enjoy!
