Splinterlands | At Odds

This is one of the straightforward rules in Splinterlands. Only cards that have an odd mana value could be used in battle. There is a sister rule too – only even mana cards only battles. Anyway, we will look at the odd ones today.

Also, remember, this is about the mana and not the attack value, health, or any other parameter. It’s best to see this rule in battle, but before that, shall we spend a minute getting to know Splinterlands? After all, that’s where you will find all these fun battles, rules, and monsters.

What Game is Splinterlands?

Splinterlands is a digital card game that allows you to collect, trade, battle, rent, and even earn from the cards. *The game gives Play to Earn a whole different meaning.* By now, you would know that the governance token (SPS) airdrop made millionaires out of the early adopters. It still keeps giving and remains a fun and engaging game.

And this is just a tiny number. I have witnessed people getting uber-expensive cards in their pack and selling them for as high as $6500. Odd Ones Out | Or Is It Odd Ones In?

As I mentioned before, in this rule only cards with odd mana caps can be used. Earlier days, I remember, all cards would be available and it wouldn’t allow us to select the even ones. But now the game has made it easier. You will only see odd cap cards when the rule is in play. So, no scope for mistakes over there.

Another thing is that, earlier most of the best cards used to be the even mana ones. I am not sure why, or maybe, it was just a coincidence. But because of that I didn’t enjoy the odd ones rule much. That has changed now. We have good cards in the odd mana bracket too. So, playing is that much fun.

On to the battle now.

The Battle | Frowns and Angry Brows

A quick look at the rule, and let’s get on with the battle.

This was a 99-mana battle and as big as it gets. There were three rules in play – the odd-ones-out, earthquake, and magic-hits-shield rule. The earthquake rule impacts all monsters without flying ability while the magic-hits-shield rule causes magic attacks to first impact shields and only then the health; meaning, the health of the opponent will not be directly impacted if the shield is present.

But the most important rule is the odd mana monsters only in battle rule. The point to note is that this rule does not impact the summoners. It is limited to the monsters in battle.

The Face-Off Screen

This is how the battlefield appeared.

The opponent is at the top of the screen while my team is at the bottom. The opponent chose the Earth splinter while I went for the Dragon splinter. The opponent’s summoner would give each of its monsters an additional magic attack. My summoner would give each monster an additional shield considering the magic-hits-shield rule.

My monster in the fourth position, the Mushroom Seer, reduces all opponent's magic attacks by one. In effect, it neutralizes the opponent’s summoner. Will it work?

We Battle Hard

By the exact end of round 2, the battlefield appeared in my favor.

The opponent lost a couple of monsters while I lost my taunt monster at the end of my lineup. Even with the earthquake rule in play, my lineup looked great.

Did I win? On to the next screen.

And The Battle Races to Conclusion

But it did not race to conclusion.

Well, whaddya know, the opponent had some ace up his sleeve. It took me six more rounds to finish up just four of the opponent’s monsters. This is why I shouldn’t have underestimated my opponent. If not for the flying monster on my side, I could have lost this battle.

Anyway, all’s well that ends well. I won! 😉

A Hard-Fought Battle | An Interesting Result

In the last few rounds because of the two flying monsters, the opponent remained immune to the earthquake rule. As such, while my monsters were dying, the opponent’s remained unaffected. Not only that, once the Mushroom Seer fell, the opponent had an increase in magic attack value. All that took the battle right up to the wire.
