Splinterlands | Fog of War

Fog of War is one of my favorite rules and is also one that has changed. When this rule was first introduced, only sneak and snipe wouldn’t work and opportunity ability continued to work. However, now all three abilities become non-functional under the fog-of-war rule. This is the change.

The fun of the rule is not in the knowledge of what happens but in players forgetting how to load their lineup. It has happened to me also. I continued to line up sneak and snipe melee attackers only to realize, that I completely overlooked the rule. 😊

That’s hilarious actually. How about we see a battle with the fog of war rule? Sure, we should. But before that, shall we spend a minute getting to know Splinterlands? After all, that’s where you will find all these fun battles, rules, and monsters.

What Game is Splinterlands?

Splinterlands is a digital card game that allows you to collect, trade, battle, rent, and even earn from the cards. *The game gives Play to Earn a whole different meaning.* By now, you would know that the governance token (SPS) airdrop made millionaires out of the early adopters. It still keeps giving and remains a fun and engaging game.

To give you an idea of how lucky you can get in Splinterlands, read my story of getting cards worth $500 from buying only a few packs worth $20.

Got Cards Worth $500 from $20 Packs

And this is just a tiny number. I have witnessed people getting uber-expensive cards in their pack and selling them for as high as $6500. In fact, there is a whole Splinterlands marketplace on the Hive blockchain and now on Wax too. And now the sales of the Rebellion packs, the newest of the lot, have also started.

Any reason not to try it out? To join, scroll down quickly. 😊

Fog of War | Restricted Action

While the fog-of-war rule affects the opportunity, sneak, and snipe abilities, it does not affect the reach and scattershot abilities. In other words, even when the fog of war is on, we can still use the reach and scattershot monsters.

Players forget these small details in battle and then end up not using the benefits of the two working abilities. This is an advantage..... if you remember. :)

Other than this, the obvious strategy is to use your ranged and magic attackers. They will continue to function but attack only the tank. The melee attackers, on the other hand, will only work in the first position.

Let’s see how we can take advantage of this knowledge.

The Battle | Frowns and Angry Brows

A quick look at the rule, and let’s get on with the battle.

It was a 57-mana battle so we could take our heavy hitters into the war zone. Of course, there were three rules to navigate through. The first one was fog-of-war and we all know what that means. The second one was the no-legendary rule, which meant we couldn’t take our legendary cards into battle. There goes a few of our heavy hitters! The third and last rule was the earth-quake rule. This rule would affect all non-flying monsters each round by deducting two health.

Now let’s get on with the fun! 😊

The Face-Off Screen

Here is what the battlefield looked like. 😊

And the opponent made the mistake that we were speaking about. He/she loaded the lineup with opportunity and sneak monsters. The funny part is that the opponent is a bot (likely). So, even a bot got it wrong. 😊

The opponent’s team is at the top of the screen while mine is at the bottom. The opponent went with the Fire Splinter. The lineup only has melee monsters and those with martyr-ability. The entire lineup was done for, from the word go. We’ll see that soon.

My team had a summoner that gave flying ability. So, all my monsters are now immune to the earthquake-rule. Besides, I had monsters with ranged and magic attacks in the second position and beyond. All of them will remain functional in the battle.

Let’s see the opponent’s annihilation; on a lighter note. 😊

We Battle Hard

To be honest, we hardly battled. Here is how the battlefield appeared at the beginning of round 3.

*Point to note – even the ambush-ability did not work*. I did not know this, and I guess, most wouldn’t have known either. The ambush-ability in this case was more like a sneak attack, so that could be the reason.

Anyway, the battle was clearly one-sided as the opponent’s monsters were incapable of fighting other than in the first position. Also, the earthquake rule was going hard on them.

The game was already close to the end.

And The Battle Races to Conclusion

Even before round 3 ended, the battle concluded.

My monsters’ attacks were incessant and the opponent bowed down quite easily. But this also shows how the fog-of-war could lull you down to take the wrong monsters into battle. This time I was the beneficiary of the opponent’s mistake.

I won! 😊

A Hard-Fought Battle | An Interesting Result

The fog-of-war is indeed a fog over the player’s mind. It’s easy to miss that the sneak, snipe, and opportunity abilities don't work. But when you do get it right, chances of victory are quite high. Why? Because your opponent might have got it wrong. Hahaha.

Anyway, I enjoyed the battle. I hope you enjoyed reading about the battle too. You can also look at it live in the link provided below. Have fun! 😊

Namaste!
