Paul Auster: American democracy is under threat

"In the next four years in this situation, I think one day we will not survive. I mean everything," said Paul Auster.

"We will be a dictatorship."

The author of books such as 'The New York Trilogy and the Moon Palace and more recently 4321', spoke to BBC Mundo at his Brooklyn home with his wife Siri Hustvedt, whose writings are also well-known.

He sees US President Donald Trump as a threat to American democracy and is campaigning against his re-election for a second term.

"We are divided as a nation, our hearts are full of hatred for each other," according to the author.

"We're divided into two houses: there are those who like Trump and those who don't."

You often mention New York in your books. You see the city and the climate is increasing since b forming the plague and touch him ?

New York has faced major challenges in its history.

We have seen plagues and plagues of various kinds; civil war, genocide, 9/11 attacks and the 1918 genocide.

This is one of the worst situations the city has ever experienced. For a time, New York was in the grip of one of the world's most devastating epidemics. But it has been successfully addressed, I can say so, more than what we have seen in other parts of the world.

And slowly, New York revived, to another degree.

The biggest problem is that we have as president, and the people in his party who support him challenge the country’s problems without any plan.

It has caused more than 170,000 deaths so far. Millions of people were infected.

By the time of the peak in April, there were at least 700 to 900 deaths a day in New York. The amount is numerous.

The official estimate of the number of people infected is less than what is actually known.
