How the #EndSARS protests have changed Nigeria forever

Protests over police brutality and killings in Nigeria have sparked a major uproar among the country's rulers, but after a two-week uprising, BBC Hausa editor Aliyu Tanko looked at us from there.

A series of street protests and social media protests have given Nigerian youths a leg up to undermine the country's traditional tradition of respect.

As the #EndSARS campaign spreads, protests against authoritarian rule erupted in Nigeria.

The alignment of the royal palace with the much-respected traditional ruler Iko is an indication of the situation at hand.

The young men who fell into the palace snatched his throne, looted his belongings and even bathed in his bathroom.

The result of protests against the infamous Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was a way for young people to vent their anger on the people who have ruled the country for decades. , and they need change.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo once warned in 2017 that “we are all sitting on the bombshell” about youth issues.

His comments are directed at young people across the continent, but they are similar to what is happening in Nigeria, a country with a population of 200 million, more than 60 percent of the population. the country is under 24 years old.

Many of those who have reached the age of employment do not have the right job, and do not have access to modern education. Earlier this year, government figures showed that 40 percent of Nigerians lived in poverty.

' It 's not uncommon for this to happen. '

But at first those in power did not understand what was happening, said Gimba Kakanda, an activist and writer in an interview with the BBC.

"They take the #EndSARS protests as they used to see in the past, which young people will get tired of dispersing if they are not taken care of."

He added, "This attitude of the country's rulers, which you can say is contemptuous of the youth, is the reason why the government has slowed down this massive movement, and shocked them."

How should the EndSars issue be resolved?

The question here is, where does this struggle go?

While those who backed and came out in support of the #EndSARS movement were peaceful, another segment of the youth saw the protests as an opportunity.

The success of the government's swift response to the protests - such as the disbandment of the SARS force and the restructuring of the police force - has given young Nigerians the confidence that they can make a difference.

A few days after the start of the youth protests they provided opportunities for those in need of emergency assistance. They also provided legal aid to clients and even set up a radio station.

All of these projects have been funded by the use of crowdfunding technology, a platform that has been shown to be a viable option for Nigerian politicians. focus on what will benefit them rather than what will benefit the land.

But there are terrible things that have happened.

Some of the protesters smashed shops, and looted supermarkets and even prominent politicians.

Although the goals of these two groups of young people are different, but they have one thing in common: it is to see the integrity of the rulers.

But it will be difficult for them to travel together. Any attempt to unite them in one place is impossible, because some of them will not agree to walk with those who are viewed with "bad habits".

'Buhari does not know where he is going '

However, there are indications that the authorities have realized that poverty and hardship are threats to national security, as Mr Kakanda sees it.

"The government has realized that it cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the anger of the youth as it has in the past," he said.

But she stumbled more than once as she tried to put out the protests.

President Muhammadu buhari addressed the nation on Thursday night, "and usually does not know where he is going", said Japeth Omojuwa, a writer on current affairs online.

President Buhari has called for an end to the protests and for talks to begin, but "history will remember him as a threat to Nigerians because they simply demanded that his government do justice.
