After the election of Hon. John as counsellor of a ward in Ijumu local Government Area in Kogi State of Nigeria, he immediately conveyed a townhall meeting with the youth seeking their opinion on the project they would want him to embark on every year. A list of four projects were agreed upon and listed for execution within four years period of one project per year. This is the third year and he has successfully and sufficiently executed the projects as planned.
In the coming year, the Johnny free medical care for the elderly shall be executed. This project shall provide free drugs and medical services to elderly men and women who are either diabetic or hypertensive or both every month. With these free monthly drugs, the poor elderly people with hypertension and diabetes will be able to leave a quality life.
In my community, many elderly poor people who are either diabetic or hypertensive or both have no access to their basic drugs and healthcare services, most of whom are peasant farmers and can not afford the drugs to manage their health challenges. Hence, some have developed complications from these diseases, while some have died from resultant effects of these diseases.
The project is expected to cution the effect of this diseases by providing free hypertensive and diabetic drugs to these poor elderly men and women. They will also be provided with free medical services such as regular clinical evaluations in the Health facilities thereby reducing the risk of preventable death among the poor elderly hypertensive and diabetic patients.
This counsellor needs to be encouraged. His leadership style is people oriented, people focused and democratic too. Building your project around people's choice at a townhall meeting is commendable.
Politicians should draw from the strategy of this young man at all levels for a robust and all round development of the people they govern as this will go along way to foster peace which is a veritable instrument for all round development.
When there is peace, all Arms of government at the various level of governance are focused and tend to have direction for evidential delivery of the dividend of democracy.
Embarking in people's oriented project is one of the core mandate of democratic ideals. Governance must be built around this ideal largely because democracy is all about the THE PEOPLE.
As a people within a democratic setting therefore, we have the responsibility of ensuring that our leaders are credibly and objectively elected into political offices without bias and egocentric disposition. Ethnicity, Tribalism, Nepotism and their likes are very injurious to democracy. They breed failure and retrogression. Let's all be stand our ground and be motivated to always do the right thing.
