Have you ever been fascinated with carbonated beverages whenever they give off a fizzy sound and wonder how do they make such kind of drinks? Some even shake the container to make the little bubbles in the drinks to produce the fizzy sound. The reason behind the fizzy sound is carbonation.
Most carbonated drinks are commercially manufactured thus it is costly. For practicality sake, one may ask if he/she can make his/her own carbonated drink. As you all know at this time of modern advantages and innovations, buying carbonated drinks from supermarket is a thing of the past. Now, you can make your own carbonated drinks right in the convenience of your own home. It is just like grinding your own coffee beans to make a freshly brewed coffee, or follow a certain magazine to decorate your own bedroom. Everything nowadays can be turned into a DIY project and one of them is carbonating your drinks. Here are several ways on how to carbonate drinks such as water.
Old School Method
You will need vinegar, baking soda, 2 bottle containers, and tubing. This method can be messy if done inaccurately. First, you need to drill holes on the cap of the bottles and connect them by using the tube. After doing so, fill up one bottle with ¾ cup water and the other bottle with ½ cup vinegar. Then put a tablespoon of baking soda in a tissue paper and slowly put it unto the bottle with vinegar and cover both bottles immediately. Once the vinegar reacts with the baking soda you have to shake both bottles so that the carbon dioxide that is produced be transferred to the bottle with water. Wait for a minute or two before you open the container.
The Modern Method
Several gadgets in the market offer machines to help you make your own carbonated drinks. The only things you practically need would be soda chargers and soda siphon. Typically, a soda siphon may hold 1 liter or more. You can choose from a variety of soda siphon containers the type of capacity that you need. They also come in plastic and silver-colored designs.
Soda chargers/ cartridges are small containers that are filled with 100% pure pressurized CO2 and are made of 100% recyclable steel. This could be purchased by box of 10 or more. They come in either snap-on or screw-in varieties that easily fit with your soda siphon.
Once you have these two things then you are all set. All you need to do is fill up the soda siphon with water to its capacity and then attach the soda charger on the top of the cap. Tightly close the siphon and press the plunger. Wait for a minute or so and there you have it. Your own carbonated water with less chemicals added. You can now make a variety of carbonated drinks depending on what you want. In addition, carbonated drinks make your drinks less acidic due to
Effervescence--- the process by which carbon dioxide bubbling out of solution is represented by a chemical reaction that turns aqueous carbonic acid to carbon dioxide or gas.
Now that you know how to make your own carbonated drinks, there is only thing left to do, enjoy your drinks!
