Colorado Lagoon
Laguna Colorada (‘Red Lagoon’) is a shallow salt lake located in the southwestern part of Bolivia, near the border with Chile. Red algae and other microorganisms give the lake a deep orange-red color, and small islands of crystal white salt, called borax, create a perfect and idyllic contrast.
In addition to tourists, this lake is regularly visited by James's flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi). Although there seem to be very many of them on the shores of the lake, they are actually a very rare species.
During the mid-1950s, scientists even declared them extinct, until they were rediscovered on the shores of the Colorado Lagoon. Today, they are classified as an endangered species, and their natural habitat has been placed under strict protection.
