Cat Island

On the island of Tashirojima, cats are kings. There are more cats than humans on Tashiroji Island. More precisely, less than a hundred people and several hundred cats live here. There are no cat owners here, as keeping pets on the island is considered inappropriate, but even so, cats live here like kings. The locals regularly feed, treat, and care for them. To protect the cats, locals stress that dogs are strictly forbidden from accessing the island. Cats were brought to the island to eradicate pests on farms, and today there are four times as many on the island as humans. From ancient times the inhabitants of the island believed that cats bring good luck.
