Yep. We don't think about it, but we are walking colonies of all sorts of other life. In fact, it is theorized that the mitochondria in our cells actually came from bacteria. (I believe mitochondria has its own DNA - is that true?) Without the bacteria in our guts, I don't think we could digest our food. (Can someone fact check that?) Pure sterility equals death.
I think mitochondria look very similar to bacteria and I am sure bacteria digest our food and feed the cells through mitochondria. I think you are correct in both statements.
