So far I've been mostly giving my tips to new people (as I discover them) rather than people I already subscribe to. It seems like a nice way to introduce myself. But most of my favourite content is now from people I subscribe to, so maybe I should think about changing my approach...

I try to random tip as well. Because we find a lot of newbies out there who don't understand engagement. I don't chase subs but I make sure that I find newbies like me who can help get some boost. That approach works for me.
I give tips for people who answer me, than to the one I'm subscribed to (like here the case) and sometimes to new people.
