Strong family ties. Filipinos are well known for being so close to their families. We take care of our elderlies for as long as they live and this gesture has been going on for a very very long time. It has also been in our culture that we live together with our family members, sometimes up to the second degree relatives - an aunt, uncle, grandparent, grandchild, niece, nephew, or half-brother or -sister. Our culture also include being used to having one breadwinner who is most of the time the father. In the absence of a father, the mother take the responsibility of earning. But in the lack of ability of both parents to earn, or due to old age maybe, the responsibility of making money for the family is passed on to the children, usually the eldest. I wonder if ever we break this culture, are we rejecting the values our elders impart to us? Sometimes family members are being irresponsible and letting you take care of the rest. The breadwinner becomes selfless taking care of the family while the family take and take what was spread on the table. That is what I think what we must break. That is letting someone else be responsible for us. We must also be responsible for our own and help the family at the same time. Not just let the family rely on the breadwinner solely.
