So here goes TRUE vs FALSE 1) TRUE - both occasions were in Albania. On the first occasion I was passing a mechanic's yard and this guy randomly pulled a pistol on me. In the moment nobody knows how they are going to react and so I just laughed at him - a bit forced tbh and walked away. Only when I was safe did the emotional impact of the possible danger occur to me. On the second occasion a guy pressed a gun into my kidney, again you don't know how you are going to react and on this occasion, as I had no money or anything of value and I couldn't do anything about it, I just looked at him and said 'That's nice!' and walked off. A calculated risk but I am still here today 2) TRUE - In northern Albania there is Lake Koman which runs between Komani and Shkodra and a ferry carries passengers between the two points and at the time just after the Kosovo war (1999) travel on it was ill advised. I was literally the only foreigner on the boat. 3) FALSE. There was an anarchy in Albania in 1997 after the collapse of several ponzi schemes one of which was closely associated with the government of Sali Berisha. In consequence Albania rose up and raided many military facilities stealing weapons (mainly Kalashnikovs, but in one place a tank and even a torpedo boat from Saranda. I'd spent a year living in Albania but went home in 1996. However many of my friends were evacuated and it was a strange thing to see the main story on the nightly news featuring a lot of people I knew and even when some tv journalists visited the town I lived in they used an interpreter who I'd been teaching English. It did happen, but I wasn't there.
