This is no different in principle to when I was at school. Jewelry and loose fitting clothes were banned in the science classroom or any pupil who didn't comply (for whatever reason) was banned from doing any more than observing experiments for safety reasons. I fully endorse this as it makes choice paramount and it is about health and safety not about religion. Can you imagine somebody wearing a loose nylon scarf getting too close to a bunsen burner, remembering that nylon melts, which means in addition to it being a fire hazard it shrivels and sticks when alight - which in turn means it sticks to the skin and does far more damage.
