Short story: The Silent Scream
The hospital waiting room was a place where time seemed to stand still. The walls, of a yellowish white, were stained by the passage of countless patients and families who, like Javier, were waiting for news that often never arrived. The air was permeated with a disinfectant smell that could not hide the sadness and despair that floated in the atmosphere. Javier was sitting in an uncomfortable chair, with his gaze lost on the floor. His mother, his only family, was in a bed on the third floor, waiting for a treatment that seemed to never come. With each passing day he felt more trapped in a maze of inefficiency and neglect. The lack of information was overwhelming; the doctors and nurses seemed to be always busy, but there were never any answers for him. Around him, other family members shared his anguish, but Javier couldn't help but feel alone in his suffering. The inefficiency of the system was like a shadow that haunted him, and every minute that passed he felt how that shadow grew, threatening to consume him. An older man, Don Luis, sat next to her. His face was marked by the wrinkles of time and suffering. - Are you also waiting? - Don Luis asked in a muffled voice. Javier nodded without looking at him. - My mother has been here for three days. Nobody tells me anything. They just say that "he is under observation". And you? - My wife needs an urgent operation. But you know how this is... If you don't have money to "speed up" things, they leave you waiting until it's too late," Don Luis replied with a deep sigh. Javier looked up, surprised by the harshness of his words. - Money? Are you saying that......? Don Luis interrupted him with a bitter gesture. - Son, this hospital is rotten. Everything here moves with bills under the table. There is no justice or compassion; only interests. That night, while Javier was walking the corridors of the hospital looking for answers, he came across Clara, a nurse who had worked there for years. His face reflected the weariness of someone who had seen too much. - Javier, how is your mother? Clara asked when she saw him. - I don't know, Clara. Nobody tells me anything. This is a total disaster—" he replied with pent-up frustration. Clara looked both sides of the aisle before speaking softly. - Look, I shouldn't tell you this... but here things are not working as they should. There are doctors who only attend quickly if they are paid something extra. It's unfair, I know, but it's the reality. Javier felt a knot in his stomach when he heard those words. - And you? Why are you still here if you know all this? Clara lowered her gaze and sighed deeply. - Because there are patients who really need help... and if I leave, there will be even fewer who will try to do something good in this place. Clara's words echoed in Javier's mind throughout the night. He could not stand idly by while his mother and other patients suffered because of a corrupt and inefficient system. He decided to act. The next day, he started talking to other relatives in the waiting room. Each story was more heartbreaking than the last: children without essential medicines, the elderly left on stretchers for days and operations postponed indefinitely. A young woman named Mariana approached him while he was talking to Don Luis. - Are you also investigating what's going on here? - Mariana asked in a trembling voice. - I'm trying to figure it out... but every time I discover something worse — Javier replied with a gloomy tone. - My brother died here two months ago because we didn't have money to pay for the medicines he needed. No one did anything for him... No one was worried — Mariana said as tears streamed down her face. Javier clenched his fists tightly, feeling rage and helplessness building up inside him. I knew I had to do something bigger; I couldn't allow more lives to be lost in this failed system. With all the information gathered, Javier turned to Daniel, a local journalist known for his courage in exposing uncomfortable truths and for his commitment to social justice. - Daniel, I need your help. This hospital is killing people because of negligence and corruption," Javier said, handing him a dossier full of testimonies and photographs taken furtively at the hospital. Daniel flipped through the documents in silence before looking up at Javier. His eyes reflected both interest and concern. - This is huge... but also dangerous. If we publish this, there will be consequences for everyone involved... including you. — I don't care what happens to me. I just want justice for my mother and for everyone else - Javier replied with firmness and determination. The article was published a week later under the title: *"The Hospital of Oblivion: Corruption and Inefficiency in the Health System"*. The reaction was immediate and explosive; social media exploded with outraged comments and patients' stories began to go viral. Protesters began to gather in front of the hospital demanding immediate changes. Their cries echoed like echoes of despair and hope at the same time. One sunny morning while Javier was waiting for news about his mother, he saw Clara in the crowd of protesters in front of the hospital. She recognized him and ran to him with tears shining in her eyes. - Javier! You did it! Look at all this... People are talking... They're struggling! Clara exclaimed with a mixture of joy and relief. Javier nodded slowly, although his face was still full of worry and uncertainty about his mother's condition. - Yes... but there is still a lot to be done. Days later, official investigations revealed a corruption network inside the hospital involving several senior officials and doctors. They were dismissed and prosecuted legally; the government promised deep reforms in the local health system to prevent similar situations from happening again. However, for Javier, the victory came too late: his mother died before receiving the treatment he desperately needed due to the inefficiency of the medical system. Standing in front of his mother's grave on a gray and rainy day, Javier felt an overwhelming mixture of grief and heartbreaking pride. He had lost the most important person in his life; however, his struggle had saved many other lives by exposing the flaws of the corrupt system. Clara appeared behind him and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. - Your mother would be proud of you... What you did changed all this forever—" she said softly as she looked towards the grave adorned with withered flowers. Javier closed his eyes as a tear rolled down his cheek. - It wasn't enough to save her... but maybe now others won't have to go through the same thing. In this city marked by years of inefficiency and corruption, Javier's sacrifice lit a spark that was difficult to extinguish: the hope of a more just future for all those whose cries had been silenced for too long. From that moment on, Javier vowed to continue fighting not only for his mother but also for all those trapped in a system where pain was common currency and where every voice counted to build a true and lasting change.
