Short story: The roots of the tree

In the Valley of the Shadows, a secluded village among mountains, women were seen as guardians of the home, in charge of taking care of the children, preparing food and keeping the house in order. Men, on the other hand, occupied public spaces and made all the important decisions. Women could not attend meetings or participate in debates; their voice had no place outside the walls of their homes. However, Maria, a curious and restless young woman, felt that something was not right. Since childhood she had heard stories from her mother and grandmother about ancient times when women were respected as spiritual leaders and wise counselors, but those stories were always told in whispers, as if they were forbidden secrets. One day, while cleaning the wooden floor of her house, Maria discovered a loose board. When he picked it up, he found an ancient manuscript wrapped in cloth. The text was written in an archaic language she could barely understand, but it contained names and stories that piqued her curiosity: it told of Hypatia of Alexandria, a philosopher and astronomer who had defied the norms of her time; of Hildegard of Bingen, a medieval nun who wrote about medicine and music; and of many other women whose achievements had been forgotten by official history. Maria spent days studying the manuscript, deciphering its words with the help of old books she found in the village library. Every story she discovered filled her with admiration and hope. She understood that women had been much more than caregivers; they had been leaders, scientists, artists and visionaries. She decided that she couldn't keep that knowledge just for herself. One evening, while having dinner with his mother, he decided to share what he had found. "Mom... I found something amazing—" Maria said with restrained emotion. An ancient manuscript hidden under the floor of our house.  - A manuscript? - asked his mother frowning -. What does he say?  —She talks about extraordinary women: Hypatia, Hildegard... Scientists, philosophers... Women who led communities and changed the world - Maria replied enthusiastically.  "Maria—" her mother warned worriedly, "be careful. If anyone finds out about this... you could get in trouble. They don't want us to remember those things here.  "I can't keep quiet," Maria replied firmly. These stories are important. The women of the village have a right to know. She called a group of women to share what she had learned. At first, many were hesitant to attend. They were afraid of being punished by their husbands or by the mayor, who was known for his authoritarian character and strict rules on the role of women. But gradually, curiosity overcame fear, and a small group began to meet secretly at Maria's house. On a dark and silent night, five women sat around a candle-lit table. "Thank you for coming," Maria said looking at each one gratefully. I know it's risky to be here, but what I'm about to show you could change everything we believe about ourselves.  - What are you talking about? - Asked Elena, an old woman with tired but curious eyes-. What is so important as to challenge the mayor?  Maria took out the manuscript carefully and placed it on the table.  -This... This text tells stories about women like us, but different: strong, wise women... Leaders — she explained as she unfolded the yellowed pages in front of them.  Lucia, a shy young woman sitting on the edge of the table, frowned in disbelief.  - Leaders? How? We have never been more than caretakers here... - she murmured almost to herself. Maria shook her head and pointed to one of the names written on the manuscript.  —That's what they want us to believe—" he said firmly. But look at this: Hypatia taught astronomy and mathematics; Hildegard wrote about natural medicine... They were respected by their communities.  Elena touched the manuscript with trembling hands while her lips outlined a nostalgic smile.  - My grandmother used to tell me similar stories... But she always said they were dangerous - she revealed in a voice muffled by memories. The resistance started brewing that night. Inspired by the stories in the manuscript, the women decided to share what they had learned with each other and transform that knowledge into art to transmit it without arousing suspicion. They began to embroider fabrics with symbols and patterns that represented the stories of the manuscript: stars for Hypatia and her astronomical studies; plants for Hildegard and her natural medicine; open books for all those writers whose work had been silenced. When the mayor found out about these clandestine meetings, he burst into a rage. He ordered the manuscript to be confiscated and prohibited any kind of meeting between women without male supervision. In a humiliating public act, he tried to burn the text in front of the whole town to teach them a lesson. In the town's central square, surrounded by men armed with sticks and torches, the mayor held up the manuscript in front of the crowd. - This is a threat to our order! - she shouted while waving the text in front of everyone — Women should stay where they belong: at home. This text only brings dangerous ideas. Maria stepped forward from the crowd without any fear. - That text is our story! - he exclaimed forcefully — they have no right to destroy it. The mayor looked at her with contempt before answering: - Your story? Women have no history; they are guardians of the home and nothing more. But Maria had foreseen this: before the mayor's attack she had made copies of the manuscript and hidden them in safe places. The resistance culminated on a special night when Maria led all the women towards the central square carrying a giant cloth embroidered with symbols and patterns representing the stories of the manuscript. In the middle of the square they planted a young tree that they called "The Tree of Knowledge". While they were digging the earth to place their roots under the dim light of the stars, Mary declared before the assembled men: — We are not just guardians of the home; we are guardians of knowledge - she said as she placed the last shovel of dirt around the tree — This tree will grow as a symbol of our recovered memory and our collective strength. Elena approached the newly planted trunk while muttering: - These roots are our roots; no one will ever be able to pull them out. Lucia looked up at the men present before adding: - They can't stop us. They cannot silence what we already know. The men tried to stop them that night but it was too late: the women had found their voice and were ready to defend it. Over time, even some men began to be interested in the stories embroidered on the fabrics and the knowledge shared under the growing shade of the tree. The Valley of the Shadows was never the same again. The women recovered public spaces and began to teach what they had learned to their sons and daughters alike. The tree grew tall and leafy becoming a place where everyone could gather to learn about those forgotten times when men and women worked together as equals. The roots of the tree have since symbolized the legacy recovered by women; its growth represented the unstoppable force of knowledge shared between future generations. Source of the images.
