Short story: Memories of a Christmas Eve
It was Christmas eve, and the cold December air was sneaking through the slits of the window, bringing with it the aroma of pine from the tree decorated in the living room. The twinkling lights of the tree created a soft glow that illuminated the face of Javier, a mature-aged man who was settling on his sofa, ready to spend a special evening. In his hand, he held a controller that had witnessed countless virtual adventures. Turning on the console, the first chords of a classic game echoed in the room. The melody brought him a smile, and his mind began to travel back in time. Every pixel on the screen was a reminder of those golden days, when arcade salons were the epicenter of fun in their city. As the game loaded, Javier closed his eyes for a moment and let the memories flow. He imagined himself as a teenager, with his bands T-shirt and an upside-down cap. "Come on, Miguel! Your turn!"he was yelling at his friend while the two of them were crowding in front of a "Pac-Man" machine. The bright lights and vibrant sounds of the living room filled the air with an infectious energy. "Who needs a joystick when you have reflexes like mine?"replied Miguel with a mocking laugh, as he tried to dodge the ghosts in the game. Javier remembered how they pushed each other, trying to distract each other while they competed to see who could reach the highest level. With a nostalgic smile on his face, Javier selected "Street Fighter", another classic that would transport him to those happy moments. The screen lit up with the iconic characters ready to fight. While playing, he remembered the long afternoons spent between laughter and screams of excitement. "You can't be that good! That's not worth it!"Miguel exclaimed after losing a game. "It's all part of the game, man! You have to improve!" Javier replied with a laugh, enjoying every shared moment. As the night progressed and I surpassed levels, I also felt a twinge of melancholy. The arcade salons had disappeared over time; now they were just fuzzy memories in his mind. She looked around her living room: the walls were adorned with family photos and memories of past trips, but she felt that something was missing. At that moment, his phone vibrated on the table. It was a text message from Miguel: "Do you remember that time we almost broke the Street Fighter machine? That's crazy!"Javier smiled when he read it and quickly replied: "Yes! I will never forget your face when you lost to that girl who had never played before." As he continued to play, he felt that those shared moments kept him connected to his friends. However, he was also aware that many were no longer by his side; some had moved to other cities, others had taken different paths in life. "What would you do if you had another chance to go back to those days?"Javier muttered to himself as he progressed through the game. The answer was clear: to relive every laugh, every friendly competition and every unforgettable moment. At the end of his gaming session, he looked out the window at the lights that adorned the neighboring houses. In that instant he understood that although the arcade salons had disappeared, the memories remained alive in his heart. That Christmas Eve had not only been a celebration of the present; it was also a tribute to his past. With a nostalgic smile still on his lips, he turned off the console and settled on his sofa. The evening continued with the soft murmur of carols in the air and the warm glow of the Christmas tree. As she gazed at the twinkling lights, she made a silent promise: she would never let those memories fade away. "Maybe tomorrow I'll call Miguel," Javier thought as he let himself be carried away by the warmth of the memory. "After all, there are many more good nights to come." Source of the images.
