Short story: The Invisible Gaze

Julian was a man of about forty, with a thin figure and a deep gaze that seemed to hide a thousand stories. His dark hair was beginning to show the first gray hairs, and his face, although serious, had a touch of friendliness that made him seem approachable. He lived alone in a modest apartment, located on a quiet street on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by trees that whispered in the wind and houses that seemed to sleep in the evening sun. His life was spent between working days as a maintenance technician and afternoons dedicated to his hobbies: reading mystery novels and taking care of his plants, which always seemed to flourish under his care. Among her most ingrained routines was her daily visit to the nearby supermarket, a place that had become part of her everyday life. The supermarket was a two-story building, with large windows reflecting the blue sky and a sign that glowed at night with neon lights. There he bought the necessities for the week and, occasionally, he allowed himself some whim, such as a chocolate bar or a bottle of wine that he enjoyed alone on his small balcony while watching the sunset. However, what used to be a mundane activity began to transform into something disturbing. It all started one Tuesday afternoon, when Julian noticed something strange while walking down the aisle of canned goods. While examining the labels on the tuna cans, he felt a close presence. Turning his head, he saw one of the supermarket employees, a young man in a blue uniform and a black cap, standing at the end of the aisle. The young man had brown eyes and a shy smile that seemed to hide behind a budding beard. What struck him was not her presence per se, but the fact that she seemed to be staring at him. Julian looked away quickly, uncomfortable, but he did not attach more importance to it. The next day, something similar happened. This time it was a woman in the fruit section who seemed to be watching him as he selected some juicy red apples. The woman had her blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail and was wearing a white T-shirt with the supermarket logo. His gaze was intense, but Julian tried to convince himself that they were simple coincidences. However, as the days passed, the feeling became more intense. The employees of the supermarket seemed to always be close to him, no matter which section he was in. If he was choosing yoghurts at the dairy, someone replenished products right next door; if he went to the bakery, another employee cleaned the nearby counter too insistently; even at the checkout, cashiers looked at him intently while passing their purchases through the scanner. Paranoia began to take hold of Julian. Why was he being watched? Had I done anything to get his attention? He tried to remember if he had ever had any conflicts with the supermarket staff or if he had acted suspiciously without realizing it. But I couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. Despite this, every visit to the supermarket became an experience full of tension and distrust. One night he decided to take action on the matter. He sat down at his small desk, surrounded by books and papers, and began to write down everything he had observed: the furtive glances, the synchronized movements between employees, and the occasions when they seemed to follow him down the aisles. Reading his own notes, he realized that he had created a kind of mental map of the behavior of the supermarket staff. But this only fueled his paranoia more. Finally, Julian devised a plan to confirm his suspicions. The next day he returned to the supermarket with a different attitude: this time he would not just go shopping; he would go to observe them before they could observe him. He walked between the halls pretending to look for something specific while analyzing every movement around him. What he discovered was even more disturbing: employees seemed to communicate with each other with subtle gestures and quick glances. It was as if they were coordinating their actions to always be close to him. He could barely sleep that night. His mind was full of crazy theories: were they spying on him for some secret reason? Was it part of a social experiment? Had I made a mistake that I wasn't aware of? The uncertainty consumed him. Determined to face the situation, Julian returned to the supermarket the next day and waited until it was almost empty to speak directly to one of the employees: the young man in a black cap that he had noticed from the beginning. The sun was starting to set, casting long shadows on the supermarket floor, and the atmosphere was calmer than ever. "Excuse me," said Julian in a trembling voice, "but I need to ask something.".. why are you guys watching me so much? The employee looked at him surprised and then let out a nervous laugh. His smile was genuine, and for a moment, Julian saw in him a normal guy, not a spy or an actor in a conspiratorial plot. - Us? We're not watching him—' he replied. It's just that you come every day at the same time and you always seem so focused... I think some colleagues have commented on that and maybe that's why we pay more attention to it without realizing it. Julian felt the weight in his chest slowly begin to dissipate. It had all been a figment of his imagination and a coincidence fueled by his own insecurity. Although it was still hard for him to believe it completely, he decided to accept the explanation. Since then, Julian continued visiting the supermarket as usual, but this time with a more relaxed smile and less suspicion in his mind. However, he never stopped wondering if maybe there was something more behind those looks... Something I would never get to discover. But he didn't care so much anymore. I had learned that sometimes what seems like a mystery to us is simply life itself, with its little coincidences and fleeting glances. Source of the images. Image created with Starryai.
