Short story: The Camp of Silence
Deep in a dense and remote forest, where the light barely managed to filter through the treetops, a group of people woke up in the midst of confusion and fear. The place where they were located was a makeshift camp, surrounded by an electrified fence that emitted a constant humming sound, as a perpetual warning that there was no escape. Surveillance cameras swung slowly from rusty poles, watching every move with relentless mechanical eyes. No one knew how he got there. The memories were confused, fragmented, as if something or someone had taken them away. The air was heavy with tension and despair. Some were crying silently, others were screaming demanding answers, but no one was responding. It didn't take long for them to discover that this place was neither a refuge nor an accident: it was a prison designed to break both the mind and the body. And behind all this was Dr. Alexander Krauss. Krauss was a man known in scientific circles for his genius and his inordinate ambition. He had amassed a fortune thanks to his research in neuroscience and experimental psychology, but he had also gained notoriety for his unethical practices. Years ago, when accusations of inhumane experiments began to pile up, Krauss disappeared without a trace. It was now clear that he had not abandoned his ideas: he had carried them out in the shadows, far from the reach of the law. The camp was his personal laboratory, and the prisoners were his guinea pigs. - What do they want from us? - asked Elena, a young journalist who had been investigating mysterious disappearances in the region before she was captured. His voice trembled as he watched the other prisoners. Why are we here? "I don't know," replied Miguel, a former military man whose robust build contrasted with the gloomy expression on his face. But whatever it is, it's not good. The days passed slowly, each one more terrifying than the last. Prisoners were subjected to tests designed to push them to the limit. Some faced psychological experiments: extreme isolation in dark cells, sleep deprivation for days, or terrifying simulations that confronted them with their worst fears. Others suffered physical torture: electric shocks, pain resistance tests or strenuous exercises that left their bodies on the verge of collapse. Elena was taken to a clean room where electrodes were placed on her head. A metallic voice ordered her to look at a screen as disturbing images flashed in front of her. His heart was pounding hard; he felt his mind slowly falling apart. - What do they want from me? - she cried through tears -. Let me out! But no one answered. Miguel, on the other hand, was forced to carry heavy stones under the scorching sun while the guards watched him with derision. - Is that all you got? — one of them shouted at him as he pushed him with the butt of his rifle. I thought you were a soldier. Miguel gritted his teeth and moved on. He could not afford to falter; he knew that his physical strength was his only advantage in that infernal place. Despite the horror they were living, Elena and Miguel began to form a bond based on the mutual need to survive. On the few occasions when they could talk without being overheard by the cameras or the guards, they shared ideas on how to escape. "We have to find a way to get out of here," Elena said one night as they both rested next to other exhausted prisoners. We can't take this anymore. "I know," Miguel replied quietly. But we need a solid plan. If we fail, there will be no second chance. For weeks they carefully watched the camp, looking for weak points in security. Eventually, they discovered a section of the electrified fence where the wires looked older and worn out. Using improvised tools that they had managed to hide during daily inspections, they began working secretly to disable that part of the electrical system. The night of the escape came under a sky covered with dark clouds that hid the moon. The group moved cautiously through the shadows while Miguel deactivated the cables with firm but trembling hands. - He's ready! he finally whispered. Let's go! Elena led the group towards the gap as the guards patrolled unsuspecting. However, not all managed to escape; some were captured or shot down before reaching the nearby forest. When Krauss discovered what had happened at dawn, he mounted a relentless hunt to recover his "subjects". Using drones and trackers implanted without the knowledge of some prisoners, he sent his men after them with clear orders: capture them alive if possible... but dead if they did not cooperate. Elena and Miguel led the surviving group through the forest while using tactics learned during their time at the camp to evade their pursuers. "This way," Miguel said as he pushed aside thorny branches to make way. We have to stick together. They finally arrived at the main laboratory where Krauss was supervising their operations from a room full of monitors and advanced equipment. —This ends now—" Elena said determinedly as she held a makeshift pistol made from parts stolen from the camp. Krauss smiled coldly as he saw them enter. - Do you really think you can stop me? he asked calmly. All this is bigger than you... bigger even than me. Miguel hit him before he could say more. While Elena destroyed the servers where Krauss stored years of data about his inhuman experiments, Miguel neutralized the scientist and knocked him unconscious. Although they wanted to hand him over to the authorities, they knew that his wealth and influence could protect him even behind bars. "We can't let him go free," Miguel said as he looked at the unconscious man. If he gets out of here, he'll do it again. Elena nodded sadly before making the most difficult decision: they left Krauss locked up in his own camp, surrounded by the same traps and horrors that he had designed for others. Days later they emerged from the forest exhausted but free. Although they could never erase the physical and emotional scars they carried with them, they vowed to expose to the world what they had lived through. Thanks to Elena's testimony and the evidence recovered from the destroyed laboratory, an international investigation was sparked into the clandestine activities financed by unscrupulous billionaires. The camp was abandoned as a cursed place where the echo of the screams still seemed to resonate among the dark trees of the eternal forest... but for those who managed to escape, that place was no longer just a symbol of human suffering; it was also irrefutable proof of the indomitable power of the spirit in the face of the most absolute horror.
