Short story: Ghost Code: the Hidden Network of the Digital Gods

Chapter 1: The Price of the 2%  The air in the backstage of the *Neon Nexus* stadium was dense, charged with the hum of overheated computers and the acidic aroma of machine coffee. Don Ramón, the manager of Fénix Digital, slid four USB sticks on the metal table in front of the computer. His eyes, surrounded by dark shadows, shone with a mixture of desperation and ambition.  "This will give them the two percent they need to be gods, not heroes—" he whispered, fixing his gaze on Leo, whose face was reflected on the screens full of codes. Without this, *Codex* will make them mush in the semi-final.  Valeria, the sniper of the team, opened one of the files with a dry click. His expression, always calculating, tensed when he saw the algorithms that predicted enemy movements with unnatural accuracy. His black fingernails drummed on the keyboard, as if trying to decipher not only the software, but the morality of using it.  - This is a blatant trap! - Leo hit the wall with a closed fist, making the monitors vibrate. - Since when have we been playing dirty, Ramon? Since when did *I* play dirty?  Adrian, the veteran strategist, adjusted his glasses with studied calm. His voice, low and raspy from years of sleepless nights, sounded like a grim reminder:  - Ramon doesn't move chips, Spectre. It moves entire markets. If we report it, the sponsors will bury us before we can blink.  In the corner, Tomás, the team's rookie, was practicing basic movements on a private server. His enthusiasm was almost tangible, like a bubble of purity in the midst of cynicism.  - We can win clean! We are Digital Phoenix! - he exclaimed, ignoring the complicit looks the others were exchanging.  Mara, sitting in the gloom with three blinking laptops, didn't look up. His fingers were flying over the keyboards, writing scripts that no one else understood. The blue glow of the screens illuminated his expressionless face, but there was a glint of guilt in his eyes.  --- Chapter 2: Neon Babel, the Digital Battlefield  The Seoul Stadium was a Moderna cathedral, with LED light arches and holographic screens projecting the *Neon Babel* map. Two million online viewers were watching the continental final between Digital Phoenix and *Codex*, the undefeated Korean team.  On stage, Leo adjusted his headset, feeling his heartbeat in his temples. Through the voice chat, Valeria's voice cut the silence:  - Sniper in sector 7! Rook, back off now!  Too late. The explosion of an energy shot eliminated Tomás from the game. The camera captured Nyx, the leader of *Codex*, making the gesture of cutting a neck in front of the lens. His smile was a sinister nod to cameras that couldn't show the truth behind the screens.  - Cipher, activate the Hades protocol! - Don Ramon roared from the broadcast booth, his voice distorted by the speakers.  Mara held her breath. His fingers hovered over the *Enter* key, while on his secondary monitor an anonymous message flashed: * "If you do, you will be as guilty as he is."*  - Spectre, if I activate this... - she murmured, but Valeria's voice interrupted her, high-pitched and desperate:  - Do it or Nyx will exterminate us! My kill ratio won't survive another defeat!  A shrill beep filled the stadium as the server froze. The screens showed a cryptic message: * "Gods fall when mortals play at being hackers." *  --- Chapter 3: The Shadow of L4C3R4  As the chaos engulfed the stadium, Claudia Márquez, an independent journalist with a network as extensive as it is obscure, was watching the security cameras from an internet cafe on the outskirts of the city. His fingers, adorned with silver rings, were typing stolen access codes until an encrypted transmission appeared: Don Ramón was trading with Nyx in an alley, exchanging a thumb drive for a wad of cryptocurrencies.  - What the hell is L4C3R4? - he muttered when he discovered a hidden folder on the tournament servers, protected by a military encryption.  Backstage, Leo confronted Mara, pushing her against a wall of interlocking wires. The burning smell of the circuits was suffocating.  - You created the backdoor! They will disqualify us, they will destroy us!  She did not defend herself. Instead, he showed his cell phone: a message from Nyx glowed in the dark. * "Your manager bet two million against you. I just balance the scales."*  --- Chapter 4: The Fall of the Digital Icarus  The silence in the stadium was sepulchral as the screens filled with static. Claudia burst into the control room with security guards, her tablet held up like a real banner.  "Don Ramon Valdez, you are under arrest for result manipulation and money laundering through illegal betting—" he declared, as officers handcuffed his hands that once held legitimate trophies.  The manager laughed, a harsh, venom-laden sound:  - You guys were already dead! Without me, they're just NPCs in a game they don't even control!  The disintegration of the team was rapid and brutal:  - Valeria signed with *Codex* at dawn, erasing all traces of her past in Phoenix.  - Tomás uploaded a farewell video to YouTube: * "If this is professionalism, I prefer to be a casual"*, before deleting his account.  - Adrian disappeared on the Tokyo subway, carrying a hard drive with secrets worth more than his life.  --- Chapter 5: Echoes on the Dark Web  * Six months later*  Leo lived in a basement in Berlin, surrounded by screens showing endless streams of data. His new life as a server moderator was a self-imposed exile, until the mail arrived at 3:47 a.m.:  > Subject: Re: The game continues  > Text: *"Search for L4C3R4. They control 37% of global bets. - C-"*  The encrypted folder contained grainy photos: high-profile politicians and *Aether Legends* executives at a clandestine meeting in the Cayman Islands. An attached video showed Mara handing over a thumb drive to Nyx... but the file was corrupted to 47%, leaving only a phantom frame: the empty gaze of Don Ramón behind bars.  In a bar in Seoul, Claudia was finishing her article with a glass of smoked whiskey in one hand. The headline read: * "Who rules the eSports gods?"*, but a message in her anonymous mailbox stopped her: *"Post this, and your source in Kuala Lumpur will disappear"*.  --- Epilogue: The Invisible Players  The official broadcast declared the tournament *"void due to technical failures"*, but the forums were ablaze with conspiracy theories:  - Users reported old games with altered statistics.  - Nyx signed a record deal with *Aether Legends*, his face now on billboards from Tokyo to New York.  - On abandoned servers, 17 anonymous accounts kept modifying codes, like ghosts in the machine.  While Leo was deciphering the last fragments of L4C3R4, a notification flashed on his second monitor: *"New message from Mara (2 seconds ago)"*.  Before I could click, all the screens turned off. In the black reflection of the monitor, he saw for an instant the silhouette of someone behind him.  THE END... OR THE FIRST MOVEMENT  ---  *Author's note: As of press time, 68% of *Aether Legends* servers still use unregistered protocols. No gamer, journalist or hacker has answered the key question: Who updates the systems when everyone is asleep?* Source of the images. https://pixabay.com/es/photos/juego-de-azar-quedarse-en-casa-4970616/
