Short story: The Last Station
It was a cold autumn afternoon at the city subway station. The fallen leaves danced to the rhythm of the wind, as passengers rushed to their destinations, wrapped in their coats and scarves. The sound of the train echoed off the concrete walls, creating an echo that filled the atmosphere. In the crowd, a man in a dark suit, with a tense expression and a perfectly fitted tie, was waiting for his train. Her face reflected the rush and stress of a tiring day at the office. Next to him, a homeless man with threadbare clothes and an unkempt beard was observing the surroundings with tired eyes. His skin was scarred by the cold and life on the streets, but there was a spark of intelligence in his look that belied the stereotypes that many had about him. “Can't you find a better place to be?"said the man in the suit, frowning at the sight of the tramp so near. His tone was dismissive, as if simply sharing the same space was an offense. “And what do you know about my life?"replied the tramp, looking up defiantly. "Not everyone is lucky enough to wear an expensive suit. Sometimes circumstances take us to unexpected places.” "Good luck! That's what you call living like that, huh? You're a nuisance!"replied the man, his voice heavy with contempt. The crowd began to stop around him, some pulling out their phones to record the altercation unfolding before them. The tension grew rapidly. The tramp took a step forward, his face flushed with anger. "Stop talking to me like that! I am no less than you for not having money. Dignity cannot be bought.” "Less? You're a parasite! Go home!”The man in the suit pushed the homeless man hard, who stumbled but stayed on his feet, his eyes burning with fury. “Don't touch me!" exclaimed the tramp, angrily. The fight escalated; the man tried to walk away, but the homeless man followed him, shouting insults that echoed through the station. The crowd watched with increasing morbidity, some murmuring among themselves while others recorded every moment. In a moment of carelessness, the man lost his balance and fell towards the train tracks. The sound of the approaching train's whistle filled the air like an ominous omen. "Shit!"one onlooker shouted as others started to panic. The atmosphere became electric; the murmurs turned into uncontrolled screams. "Help! Get him out of there!"cried a woman in the crowd, her voice trembling with terror as she looked at the man trapped on the tracks. Her hands were shaking as she held her phone, unable to take her eyes off the horror unfolding before her. People who were watching with curiosity before now panicked. Hysterical screams rang out as some tried to help the man trapped on the tracks. “Please, someone help me!"the man pleaded from the tracks, his eyes filled with fear and despair as he watched the train approaching at high speed. The homeless man stood motionless, his face reflecting a mixture of shock and guilt. “I... didn't mean for this to happen...” he muttered to himself, unable to take his eyes off the man he had despised moments before. In that instant, he understood that his own anger had contributed to this impending tragedy. A group of brave people tried to run towards him; some were shouting confusing instructions while others called emergencies. “Come on! Quick!"one of them shouted while others tried to look for something to help him get off the tracks. The train arrived at the station just as some managed to reach the fallen man. A few seconds later, the rumble of the train rolling over the track resonated like a heartbreaking echo in the hearts of everyone present. Time seemed to stand still; faces were frozen in expressions of horror and hopelessness. The crowd was completely silent after what had happened; stunned by what had just happened. “What have we done?"someone said in whispers as the tears started to well up. The murmurs turned into lamentations; some hugged each other looking for comfort in the face of the imminent. Life continued at the station after the initial chaos; but for those who witnessed the scene, nothing would ever be the same. The image of the man on the tracks would be etched in his memories as a grim reminder of how a simple dispute can lead to tragic and irreversible consequences. Source of the images.
