Short story: "Clouds of Fun"

In the not-so-distant future, where flying cars were more common than taxis and vending machines offered everything from sushi to video games, the video game industry was at a crossroads. Consoles, those armatouches that had been the pride of many homes, were beginning to look more like relics of a glorious past than entertainment devices. People no longer wanted to wait for a game to be installed; they wanted to play instantly, without complications. Thus, the cloud became the new star of the show. In a small town, a group of friends met every week in the basement of Carlos' house, a place that had been transformed into a gaming sanctuary. The walls were covered with posters of pixelated heroes, from fantasy warriors to fast racers, and the table was full of snacks that, although not very healthy, were perfect for long gaming sessions. The dim light of the screens illuminated their faces, as they immersed themselves in virtual worlds full of adventures. However, as the months passed, they began to notice that their favorite games were disappearing from the console and appearing on streaming platforms. "What is this, a plot against us?"exclaimed Javier, while trying to fit a cartridge into a console that no longer needed it. “This is a betrayal!” "Relax, man. It's just technology”" Ana replied, as she helped herself to a handful of French fries. "Besides, who wants to wait for a game to install when you can play instantly?”. At first, the group was skeptical about the idea of playing in the cloud. "What if the connection goes down? What if the game freezes at the most exciting moment?"Luis questioned, with a worried look. It was an understandable fear, as they had spent many nights of frustration waiting for a game to download or dealing with connection errors. One day, Carlos, the most adventurous of the group, decided to take a chance and try the new video game service in the cloud. With a click, he connected to the Internet and, within minutes, he was immersed in a game he had been waiting for for years. "Guys, this is amazing!" he shouted, as his friends peeked over his shoulder. The graphic quality was impressive, and the gameplay flowed like a river in spring. “No lag, no problems! It's like I'm playing on the console, but better!” Intrigued, the others decided to join the test. As the weeks passed, the excitement grew. Friends began to play together online, without the need to gather their consoles. They could access an endless library of games, from classics to the latest releases, all with just one click. “It's like having a video game buffet”" Ana joked, as she devoured a package of cookies. The idea of being able to play anything, at any time, was too tempting to resist. However, not everyone was happy with this change. Console manufacturers, who had been the kings of entertainment for years, were struggling to adapt to the new era. They launched updates and new models, but the trend was clear: video game consoles were coming to an end to make way for the cloud service on the Internet. Video game stores began to close, and shelves that were previously filled with game boxes were slowly emptied. “What are we going to do with our consoles?"Luis lamented one day, while looking at his dusty console. "Do we turn them into flower pots or something?” “We could do a farewell ceremony”" Carlos suggested, laughing. "One last game, one last pizza, and then we send them to console heaven.”The idea of a ceremony became a project. The friends started planning an event that would celebrate their love for video games and at the same time allow them to say goodbye to their consoles. The day of the ceremony arrived. They decorated the basement with balloons and banners saying "Goodbye, old friends” and "Thanks for the memories." They prepared a table with pizzas, soft drinks and, of course, a lot of snacks. Each chose a special game to play for the last time, and they sat in a circle, ready to relive their best moments. As they played, the laughs and memories started flowing. Every game was a mixture of nostalgia and joy, and every victory was celebrated as if it were a great achievement. "Do you remember when we lost that game because of your connection, Luis?"Ana joked, while everyone laughed. “I shall never forget it! It was the time I swore I'd never play with you online again." Louis, with a mischievous smile, replied: "And now I am the king of the cloud! Look how I have improved!”As they progressed through the game, the competition intensified, and the laughter was mixed with screams of excitement and frustration. It was a reminder of what really mattered: camaraderie and shared fun. Finally, it was time for the farewell. With a touch of solemnity, Carlos got up and proposed a toast. "For all the adventures we have lived together, for the hours of fun and for the consoles that brought us together. May the cloud bring us even more amazing moments!” Everyone raised their soda glasses and toasted, feeling a mixture of sadness and emotion. After one last game, they decided it was time to take the next step. With a little drama, they placed the consoles in a box decorated with drawings of their favorite characters and sealed it with duct tape. "Let them go to console heaven”" Javier said, as everyone nodded with a smile. With the box in hand, they went out to the backyard and dug a small hole. ”This is more than a funeral; it's a celebration," Ana said, as they placed the box in the dirt. "Thanks for the memories”" Luis murmured, as they covered the box with dirt. Then, they planted a small plant over the place, as a symbol that, even if the consoles left, their love for video games would continue to grow. Back in the basement, they sat down at their computers, ready to explore the vast world of the cloud. “What are we playing now?"Carlos asked, with a spark of excitement in his eyes. “There's a new adventure game that promises to be epic." “Let's try it!"exclaimed Ana, as they all connected. Within minutes, they were immersed in a new universe, full of challenges and possibilities. The transition had been easier than they thought, and the excitement of discovering new games together was palpable. As the weeks passed, the group adapted to its new reality. Cloud gaming sessions became a tradition, and every week was a new adventure. They realized that although the consoles had come to an end, the essence of what they loved was still alive. The fun, the friendship and the excitement of playing together were what really mattered. So, between laughs, games and endless anecdotes, the group of friends discovered that, even if the consoles faded, fun and friendship would always find a way to stay on top, floating on the clouds of fun. And so, with each new game, each new story and each new laugh, they realized that the true power of video games was not in the hardware, but in the connections they created and in the moments they shared.
