Short story: The Shadow of Plutocracy: An Endless Mystery

By the year 2051, the world had changed drastically. The largest company on the planet, known as "The Company", had acquired full control of the global government. In this new order, wealth was synonymous with power, and elections had been replaced by shareholder meetings where the vote was determined by the number of shares each citizen owned. The government was formed by those who accumulated the most shares, and everything was governed by the laws of the market. In this context, an anonymous citizen named Martin lived in a small and decadent urban apartment. His life was monotonous and hopeless, until one day he received a mysterious notice that he never got to read. However, the three knocks on the door that announced his arrival resonated deeply inside her. It was then that Martin decided to investigate how the world had come to this situation beyond the official version. The city was full of lights and shadows, where the rich lived in glass towers and the poor crowded into slums. Martin was moving around in the shadows, trying not to attract attention while gathering information. He began frequenting abandoned libraries and secret archives, where he found documents that revealed the true history of The Company. The Company had started as an innovative company that promised to solve the world's energy problems. However, over time, it became a giant that absorbed all other companies, until it finally acquired control of the government. Their leader, the enigmatic and powerful Mr. Jenkins, was a mysterious figure who was never shown in public, but whose influence was felt in every corner of the planet. As Martin delved deeper into his research, he began to discover the true history of The Company and the interests that had led the world to become a plutocracy. To his surprise, members of the government itself provided him with access to confidential information, apparently against his own interests. This aroused in Martin a double interest: to understand the history of the Company and to unravel the motives behind the help he was receiving. One evening, while exploring the secret archives, Martin came across a hooded figure in the hallway. The light from the emergency lamps barely illuminated the person's face, but Martin could see that she was a woman with deep-set eyes and a serious expression. - Who are you? - Martin asked, trying to stay calm. "Someone who also seeks the truth—" the woman replied in a low, mysterious voice. But be careful, Martin. Not everyone is what they seem here. - What do you mean? - Martin insisted. - The Company has eyes and ears everywhere. Don't trust anyone. Not even on yourself—" the woman said before disappearing into the darkness. Martin was left with more questions than answers. Why was someone inside the government helping him? What was behind the mysterious warning? He began to feel that he was constantly being watched, and that every step he took was monitored by some invisible force. As he continued his research, Martin came across stories from other times and places. He recalled the plutocratic period in Ecuador, between 1912 and 1925, where the banking and agro-exporting bourgeoisie had dominated the state, and how the Julian Revolution had put an end to that abominable period. He also thought about dystopian narratives that reflected the fear of inequality, such as Snowpiercer, where society was divided into two extreme classes, and how fiction had begun to reflect the fear of the consequences of the gap between rich and poor. Martin realized that, throughout history, the rich had sought to justify their position of power through magnificence, leaving their mark on society with enduring works or sponsorships that earned them the respect of the people. However, in his time, plutocracy had led to an extreme concentration of power in the hands of a few, where wealth was the only measure of a person's worth. With each new discovery, Martin felt more determined to challenge the system. He began to see that, even in a world ruled by plutocracy, there was room for resistance and change. Research became his mission, and he soon found himself surrounded by others who shared his vision of a more equitable future. Among them was Ana, a bright and passionate young woman who had lost her family in one of The Company's purges. There was also Carlos, a former engineer who had worked for The Company before realizing the true nature of his job. Together, they formed an underground movement that sought to dismantle the Company's power structure. Although the road was difficult and dangerous, Martin and his companions were determined to prove that, even in the darkness of the plutocracy, hope and the struggle for justice could prevail. They began to spread subversive messages on underground networks, calling on people to unite against the system. However, one night, while meeting secretly in an abandoned warehouse, they were surprised by Company agents. Martin tried to flee, but was caught and taken to a dark, windowless cell. The cell was full of shadows, and the air was heavy and oppressive. - Why are you bothering, Martin? a voice asked from the shadow. The system is too powerful. You'll never be able to change it. Martin looked around, but saw no one. The voice seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. - Who are you? he asked, trying to stay calm. "I'm the one who's always been here—" the voice replied. And soon you will realize that there is no escape. The cell was plunged into darkness, and Martin was left alone with his thoughts. Had it been an illusion all along? Was the resistance just a fantasy? Questions echoed in his mind as darkness enveloped him, and everything turned to silence. The last thing Martin heard was the sound of his own words, whispered in the dark: "What has happened to me?"But there was no response. Just silence. And in that silence, Martin disappeared. Days, weeks, months passed. No one knew what had happened to Martin. Some said he had been re-educated and was now working for The Company. Others claimed that he had managed to escape and was abroad, leading a global revolution. But the truth was never known. The city continued to function as usual, with its rich in its glass towers and its poor in the slums. The Company was still the power behind the throne, and the resistance seemed to have been crushed. However, in the shadows, there were rumors that something was changing. That somewhere, someone was preparing a new movement, a new struggle against plutocracy. But that was just a rumor. And in a world where the truth was a luxury few could afford, rumors were the only thing left to keep hope alive. Source of the images. Image created with Starryai.
