Short story: The mystery in the streets of downtown
It was a gray and heavy afternoon in the heart of the city center. The clouds, dense and threatening, were gathering over the buildings like a harbinger of a storm. The streets were congested, full of cars moving at a slow pace, with horns blaring in a chaotic symphony. The passers-by were walking hurriedly, dodging each other, each one immersed in his own worries. Among them, a man was walking along the sidewalk, observing the bustle with a mixture of boredom and curiosity. It was a day like any other, or so it seemed. However, something caught his attention as he was crossing a busy corner. A few meters away, a group of policemen had formed a perimeter around what appeared to be a body covered by a white blanket. The scene was disturbing; the contrast between the frantic movement of the city and the solemn stillness of that group was disturbing. The man stopped instinctively, trying to understand what was happening. Nearby, a woman was also watching the scene with obvious concern. She was carrying a bag tightly against her chest and her eyes could not take away from the place where the policemen were guarding the corpse. He murmured in a low but audible voice: - What happened? There is always something strange in this neighborhood— - His tone reflected both curiosity and fear. The man replied almost without thinking: - I don't know... but it doesn't look like any accident. Look how the cops are... -He pointed with his head towards the officers, who were talking to each other in a low voice, with tense expressions and calculated gestures. One of the policemen looked up at the curious people who were beginning to crowd near the police cordon. He firmly raised one hand and ordered: - Please, clear the area! There's nothing to see here. Move along. Despite the warning, the man remained for a few more seconds observing the scene. From his position he managed to see how two officers were lifting one end of the blanket to take photographs of the corpse. Although he could not distinguish much from afar, something in the environment made him think that this was not a common fact. The murmurs among the curious began to intensify. A young man who was recording with his mobile phone from a nearby corner seemed to know something else. The man came up to him and asked: - Do you know what happened here? The young man put down the phone and answered in a low voice, as if afraid of being overheard: - They say they found the guy this morning... but no one knows who he is or what he was doing here so early. Some people say they heard screaming last night, but you know how it is... no one wants to get into trouble. The man nodded slowly as he processed what he had just heard. Before he could ask any more questions, another policeman approached the group of curious onlookers and raised his voice with authority: - I said clear up! If they don't move, I'll have to confiscate those phones. The threat took effect quickly; people began to disperse little by little. The young man put his phone in his pocket and walked away without saying any more words. The man also decided to retire, although he could not get that image out of his head: the body under the white blanket and the officer's words about an unusual crime. As he walked through the congested downtown streets, his mind kept working relentlessly. Who would that person be? What story would be behind all this? Would it be someone known to the neighbors or just a stranger trapped by circumstances? The questions accompanied him all the way to his destination. As he moved through the urban bustle, he began to notice details that had previously gone unnoticed: the anxious faces of people, the furtive glances towards the policemen and the nervous whispers among some passers-by. It was as if everyone shared a silent unease about what had happened. He finally arrived at a nearby park where he decided to sit on a bench to reflect. Although he tried to concentrate on other things—the distant sound of water in a fountain or the occasional bird singing—that scene kept haunting his mind like a persistent shadow. The man knew that he would probably never get clear answers about what happened that afternoon. However, that moment left a lasting impression on him: a deep feeling about how fragile and unpredictable life can be in the midst of urban chaos. As he watched the first drops begin to fall from the gray sky, he realized something: even amid the constant noise of the city, there are silences that speak louder than any words.
