Short story: The Smoke of Indifference
Every morning, at dawn, a dense curtain of smoke enveloped the city of San Olmo. This smoke, the result of the burning of garbage of unknown origin, glided through the streets like a ghost whispering warnings to the unsuspecting. However, the inhabitants of San Olmo seemed to have made peace with this toxic haze; their indifference was palpable. The daily routine of the Sanolmeños began with the same ritual: opening the windows to let in the fresh air, only to be greeted by the thick smoke that hung over the city. Despite the burning in their eyes and the persistent cough that accompanied them, they continued with their lives as if nothing was happening. The laughter of children playing in the streets echoed among the buildings, while adults hurried to get to their jobs, ignoring the dark cloud that hung over them. One morning, Clara, a young mother, was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for her little son, Lucas. While stirring the oatmeal in the pot, he looked out the window and saw the smoke gathering in the air. - Mom, why does it smell so weird? - Lucas asked in his innocent voice. —It's just a little smoke, honey—" Clara replied with a forced smile. Don't worry, everything will be fine. But inside, Clara felt a knot of worry. Lucas had been coughing more than usual and his skin showed a strange pallor. That afternoon, Clara decided to visit Dr. Salazar, the neighborhood doctor. When he entered the office, he found several patients waiting. He approached the doctor when he had the opportunity. "Doctor, I'm worried about Lucas—" Clara said anxiously. He has been coughing a lot and seems more tired lately. Dr. Salazar frowned as he reviewed the boy's medical records. —I've noticed an increase in breathing problems among children lately—' she admitted. I think we should do some tests on him. Clara felt a shiver run down her back. - Do you think it has something to do with the smoke? The doctor nodded slowly. - It's possible. The smoke that covers our city every morning is not normal. We should talk about this with other parents. However, many in San Olmo continued to ignore the doctor's warnings. At a community meeting organized by Clara in the central square, she addressed her neighbors with a firm voice. - We need to talk about the smoke! - he exclaimed—. It is affecting our health and that of our children. An older man in the background raised his hand. - And what can we do? It's always been there. We can't change it. Clara took a deep breath before answering. - We can unite and demand answers from the authorities. We cannot stand idly by while our health deteriorates. The discussion continued for hours, but many remained skeptical and uninterested. At the end of the meeting, some neighbors began to leave without paying attention to Clara's words. With the passage of time, the deterioration of the health of the inhabitants became more evident. Respiratory diseases increased in medical consultations and deaths began to make headlines in local newspapers. However, many attributed their ailments to other factors: the changing weather or simply bad luck. One dark and cold night, Clara was startled awake by a loud knock on the door. When he opened it, he found Dr. Salazar visibly worried. "Clara, we need to talk—" he said urgently. I've been doing some research and I've found something alarming about the smoke. She led him inside and invited him to sit down. - What have you found out? The doctor took a deep breath before answering. - I have found traces of dangerous chemicals in the air... and it's not just ordinary garbage waste. Something else is happening here. Clara felt her heart beating faster. - What do you mean? Where does it come from? The doctor shook his head. — I don't know exactly... but there are rumors about a clandestine landfill near the city where they are burning toxic waste. We need to act before it's too late. Determined to do something about it, Clara organized another community meeting to discuss the doctor's revelations. But this time, when he arrived at the agreed place, he found many neighbors talking to each other with worried faces. - Did you hear? - asked one of them—. There are sick children everywhere and some have been hospitalized for severe respiratory problems. Clara took the floor again: - We must unite to investigate this together and stop it before it causes more damage. However, when they began to discuss possible actions, a skeptical group interrupted: - And what can we do? It's just smoke... we can't fight that. Frustration grew among those present until someone shouted: - Stop it! There's nothing we can do! Despite the widespread discouragement, Clara did not give up and decided to investigate on her own with Dr. Salazar. Together they wandered around San Olmo until they found a dusty road that led to a wooded area outside the city. As they were walking among the tall, leafy trees, they began to notice a nauseating smell in the air; it was a pungent aroma that made them feel nauseous. "This can't be good," Clara muttered as she covered her nose with a scarf. When they reached a clearing hidden among the trees, they found what appeared to be piles of burning garbage: melted plastics and rusty metals emitted a black and unbreathable smoke towards the grayish sky. Dr. Salazar pulled out his phone to take pictures while mumbling: - This is worse than I imagined... we need to take this to the authorities immediately. But before they could act, they heard footsteps behind them. A group of men suddenly appeared among the trees; their faces were grim and threatening. - What are you doing here? - one asked in a harsh voice as they advanced towards them. Clara felt a shiver run down her spine; she knew they were in trouble. Unable to escape or call for help, they were surrounded by the men who warned them: - This place is not safe for you or anyone else... you'd better go back home and forget what you've seen here. Fear took over Clara's heart as she and Dr. Salazar exchanged glances full of uncertainty; they knew that they had discovered something dark but they also knew that they were alone in this fight against an invisible shadow that threatened their home. They returned to San Olmo without being able to carry evidence or clear answers about what was really happening under that toxic cloud every morning. From that day on, silence reigned in the city again; the inhabitants continued to ignore the smoke as their lives slowly faded away under its deadly influence. The days passed without visible changes; however, Clara could not stop thinking about what had happened that day in the forest and how they had been warned by those mysterious men. The health of the village continued to deteriorate without any answer or apparent solution; every morning was a reminder of the danger hidden behind that grayish haze that covered San Olmo like an eternal curse. After weeks without news or significant changes in the community or in her collective health, Clara received an unexpected call: it was Dr. Salazar who informed her with a trembling voice: - Clara... I've been doing more research on that place... there are missing people related to it... I think we are facing something much bigger... The cold echo of her words echoed in his mind as he realized that perhaps they would never discover the whole truth behind the smoke or manage to save themselves from the dark mystery that surrounded their daily life; San Olmo had fallen under an implacable and indecipherable shadow where every dawn brought with it more unanswered questions and hearts full of sadness and uncertainty before the unknown.
