Fort Lal Qila (Red Fort in Delhi), India - my journey through Asia The fort was situated along the Yamuna River, which was a natural moat, but now the riverbed is about 1 km from the fort, and it has become a road into the old bed. The fort is located near Old Delhi in one of the seven ancient cities of eastern Shahjahanabad. It was built by Shah Jahāna in the mid-17th century. The walls of the huge Red Fort, called Lal Qila, are made of red sandstone, hence its name, like many monumental buildings in India made of this rock. At the highest point, the wall is up to 33 meters high and 2.5 meters thick.
