Largest Buddha and "Hell Garden" - Wat Muang Temple in Thailand - my journey through Asia Great Buddha or Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin The original Big Buddha was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. The monumental statue was then located in Ayutthaya, the former Thai capital. They wanted to rebuild the temple in exactly the same location, unfortunately the exact place of the old temple was not known. So it was decided to replicate the Big Buddha in agricultural regions remote from the former capital of Thailand. The works started in 1990 and 18 years later in 2008 the monument was officially put into use.
