Old Goa or Portuguese heritage in an Indian edition - my journey through Asia Old Goa - the glory days of Portugal's reign Old Goa, once a bustling colonial giant city, built on the hostile and humid shores of the Arabian Sea, is a replica of late Medieval and Renaissance European cities. This legacy from Portugal is one of India's most surprising treasures. In the 15th century, these areas were inaccessible, surrounded by the jungle, they belonged to the Sultanate of Bijapur. The first port facility was established by Indian Muslims, the rest were completed by the Portuguese. In the 16th century, they took over Goa, and on a rocky coast full of headlands and peninsulas, they built a dozen or so impressive forts, such as Aguada or Cabo del Rei.
